Capturing Kindness

These photos were taken for the task capturing kindness. I think to improve this photo I could have taken the photos at different angels, and maybe changed the coffee cup so I could have a few different colours.

Global Goals and our Community

  • Introduction to your course “Global Goal and Innovation through STEM” and why you have chosen to enrol in this elective.

I chose to enrol in this course because I am interested in sustainability for the environment.

  • Who are the United Nations?

They are an organization that tries to sustain peace across the globe. The UN was established on the October 24th 1945.

  • What is Sustainable Development?

The economic advancement that is done without exhaustion of natural resources

  • What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s)?
  • End Poverty
  • No Hunger
  • Good health and Wellbeing
  • Quality education
  • Gender Equality
  • Clean water and sanitation
  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Decent work and economic growth
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • Reduced inequalities
  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Responsible consumption and production
  • Climate action
  • Life below water
  • Life on land
  • Peace, justice and strong institutions
  • Partnerships for the goals
  • Why are these goals important?

These goals are important because they ensure that humans are living the best quality of life on earth. The UN once said “There is no ‘Plan B’ because we do not have a ‘Planet B.’ We have to work and galvanize our action.” This quote shows the importance of achieving these goals, which protect both our planet and humankind

  • Outline any progress on the SDG’s.

Gender Equality for example hasn’t been improving and the lockdown hasn’t been helping this. Lockdowns have increased the risks of violence against women. On the other hand, the Climate crisis may have actually benefitted from coronavirus. Covid 19 may result in a 6% drop in greenhouse gas emissions for 2020

  • What goals do you believe have relevance to All Saints’ College and its community?

I think Quality education would relate to All Saints because it’s a school so it would have to make sure the quality of education is up to standards. I also think clean and affordable energy would relate to all saints because they might not have the most environmentally friendly energy.

Birds and Worms

This photo was taken from a birds eye view
This photo was taken from a worms eye view

For this project we had to take a picture from different perspectives, from a bird and a worm. The aim of this project was to make us take photos from different angles.

  1. What has worked/you like & what could be improved or changed

I think I could have done better on the birds eye view photo because it isn’t really as high as I wanted it to be. Also the photo didn’t really focus that well

2.What kind of mood/meaning could a low angle create? Why would you use a low angle?

By taking a photo at a low angle it can make the object in the photo seem big and important, so the photographer would take a low angle shot to make the object seem powerful

3.What kind of mood/meaning could a high angle create? Why would you use a high angle?

A high angled shot would make the subject, in this case the flower, seem powerless and insignificant

Faceless portrait

What I liked:

I liked how the fence was able to frame the photo and by doing this the focus was primarily on the person. I also like the colours, its got a bit of green and blue and those colours go alright together.

What I could have done better:

I think the background was a bit busy ( lots of bright greenery ). To try and solve that problem we could have angled the camera to face more to the right, away from the trees. I think we also could have been a bit more creative and wore something other than my school uniform.

Year 9 OLP experience – By Amelia

Year 9 OLP was an unforgettable experience, where I was able to work as a team, leader and joined in on many camp activities. After a nine-hour bus ride we arrived at camp Kalbarri, which we would only be staying in for one night. The next couple of nights we would be staying at Z bend, then the next night in the beautiful gorge. The last proper day we trecked out of the gorge and spent our last night back at camp Kalbarri before we left on the bus the next day.

We participated in many cool activities, throughout camp, one particular activity that took a lot of courage for me and a few others was absailing into the gorge. It was a 30 metre abseil and I was part of the first group that went down. The start was very terrifying because you were horizontal above the ground, but I continued down and made it to the bottom. This took a lot of courage and resilience and I was very prepared to say I wasn’t going to do it, but I persisted and once I reached the bottom it was worth it because there was a beautiful river running through the gorge.

When we were at the base camp, we (the group and I) did an activity where we split the group in half and each group held a tarp. Then we put a ball in one of the tarps and together as a group we worked to throw the ball onto the other tarp. Camp also included a lot of walking. Walking to Z bend, walking to the gorge and more. Although this did seem quite exhausting at the time, when I reflect on it, it did mean I was able to have conversations with the members of my group and also get a bit of exercise in.

I think the main skills I have gained during camp will have to be resilience, teamwork and making new friendships. Resilience I gained while doing the abseil, and hikes. I gained teamwork by partaking in the tarp and ball activity, but also working to make dinner and lunch on the Trangia. We had to communicate and work together to end up with an edible meal, and try our best to get the least amount of sand in our dish. I also strengthened and made new friendships with people I never used to talk to, but now after sharing that experience, I now have a reason to talk to them every week. Overall camp was a valuable experience where I was able to gain new skills and join in on activities I may never get the chance to do again.

InnovatED Salvation Army Pitch

The Story:

This past term, a team, including Jason, Mia, myself and others, had been given the task by a volunteer organisation, the Salvation Army. They asked us to help them solve a problem. The problem was that they had a short of particular items and sometimes too much of an item. They wanted to make sure they were only getting the items they wanted so they asked us to make a an app or website for all the schools they were partnered with. This way they could send alerts on the app or website and one of the schools would be able to give them the particular items. We all got  into to small groups and started designing ideas for the website and thinking how we are going lay out the pages. We then decided it would be best to all merge into one big group from there we made an amazing website, were you were able to post if you could deliver an item to the organisation. From there we prepared a power point and made scripts and practiced pitching to the head of school partners of the Salvation Army. Soon we pitched  and shared our ideas and showed our power point. He saw a future for our idea and was very happy with the end result, this was news to our ears! The best part was that we got to help people who need it, struggling on the streets, and help make a difference!
