Progress Updates

In our year 10 Humanities course we are researching a topic of our choice we had the opportunity to decide from the topic of civics, geography, history and economics. Our group has chosen history and the significant event we decided to do is the 9/11 attacks. We are going to produce a showcase our outcome in a exhibition in term 4.

Progress Update 1

Things we have achieved so far is:

  1. Chosen our topic of Interest
  2. Created an essential question
  3. Researched sources for our annotated bibliography
  4. Completed the annotated bibliography
  5. Started gathering resources and information for our exhibition display

Our Plan for the Project in the Future:

  1. At the end of week 1 we want to finish our planning for our displays
  2. By the end of week 1 also we want to have collected all the materials for the display
  3. Week 2, we want to be starting our display
  4. Week 3 we want to finish one of our displays and some what finishing the second display
  5. Week 4-5 we want to spend this time refining and polishing our displays and/or any other work

Some Challenges we had to face along the journey:

  1. We originally chose The Black Death but we found it hard to motivate ourselves to be focused on the topic/work, so we brainstormed other ideas and we picked a topic that everyone was interested in and is a lot better for our final outcome
  2. Technical difficulties with the forms link for our resources that were needed for the annotated bibliography

Progress Update 2

Overview:

My group and I have finished our plan for the year 10 HASS project and we are now starting to put all of our information into our end presentation. Specifically we are starting to construct the board and beginning to gather all the materials we need for the end result. We are also going to make our own people profiles (who were involved in the attacks) to pin on the board to help with the visual aspect of the board. The main idea of the board is to show and present the idea of the process of the planning before the 9/11 attacks happened. Throughout this whole process we are making sure that we are always incorporating the feedback we get.

The expectations of the board is to display the planning and process of the 9/11 attack. The idea is to organise it like a “Murder Board” and use yarn and pins to show all the details of the incident.

Things we have achieved so far is:

  1. Organised a zoom meeting with John Mahony, with the help of Mr Basell. He was a survivor of the 9/11 attack
  2. Prepared a series of question for the interview to ask Mr John Mahony to collect knowledge from the experiences for the 9/11 attacks
  3. Collected the information of the attack for our board as well as gather sources for our visual aspects of the display
  4. Created a plan of the layout of our display, roughly planning where the sources etc. are going to be placed
  5. Planned the list of materials that we need to purchase before the day of the exhibition to assemble our final product

Our Plan for the Project in the Future:

  1. Purchase the list of materials needed for the display
  2. Have the interview with Mr John Mahony and record the interview
  3. Listen to the recorded interview with Mr John Mahony to gather important information needed for the exhibition and editing the video so that it is presentable for the day
  4. Start printing and getting resources ready for the cork board that is going to be displayed on the day of the exhibition

Capability Development

Effective Communication is a capability that I believe I have developed. This capability has been developed and used throughout my year in 2021 and in the subject called Muir.

Snorkelling In Rottnest

Muir is a subject that I did in semester 1 that helped bring forward my effective communication and I felt that I used the capability a lot during the unit especially in the excursion. The excursion was a trip to Rottnest for the day. During the excursion communication was very important because it was an aspect everyone needed to use to make sure yourself and others around you were safe. Example: Using effective communication to be safe in the water so nobody gets lost.

There are many ways I developed effective communication in my outdoor education unit. Effective communication became a capability over time, and I developed it better and stronger the more I used it. An example of a time where I needed to use my communication capability was in the ocean snorkelling. During the swim we needed to stay in partners and make sure you communicated with them well to ensure we were both safe but still having fun, by me checking in with my partner and talking to them helped a lot with developing my communication skill effectively. Not only did I use and evolve my skill whilst being in the water I used my communication very well on land. Talking to my peers and always making sure that they are ok and having fun was a major part in making sure I can communicate well with my friends. The whole experience of this unit (Muir) assisted me with assuring my capability was used thoroughly and carefully throughout the subject.
