Work Experience

In November of 2022, I participated in the work experience program.

For my work experience, I went back to my Primary School, Banksia Park Primary School. I was initially placed into my old year one class and spent the week in the classroom. On the second day, I was also invited into the Kindy classroom which was super exciting. I spent the week alternating my time between these two classrooms.

In the year one classroom, I helped run morning activities such as morning maths, sports and art classes. I was also placed with two students. One boy was highly advanced in maths so I spent time with him guiding him through year 3 maths and helping with timetables. The other student had missed lots of kindy and pre-primary due to illness and so I helped her with reading, writing and maths and formed a very close bond with her throughout the week. There was also a student in the class who suffered from many disabilities including autism. I spent a lot of time with him, doing sensory activities and helping him with simple timetables. This inspired me to go on to do a Bachelor of Education at Murdoch University with a Minor in Inclusive Education (working with children with special needs) when I graduate at the end of the year.

In the kindy class, I worked with the children doing activities such as learning letters in the alphabet and writing their names. As it was ending the year the teacher was also preparing the students’ workbooks so I spent some time sorting through work and filing it in each child’s book. I also helped students to do numerous Christmas activities and at times helped them prepare for lunchtime.

Food Deliveries

Over the past 5 years, I have been doing food deliveries through the All Saints parish. Every second Saturday at about 11 in the morning, my dad and I drive to All Saints and pick up the food for that week’s deliveries. The food packages vary on the number of people, the dietary requirements of the people and if they have children or not. Each family or person get between 3 and 6 bags depending on the size of the family. They also get between 4 and 12 eggs. We then set off to deliver the food parcels. We deliver them all over Perth and do between 4 and 7 deliveries each time but we have done up to 11 during busier times.
Food deliveries have given me a new appreciation for what I have. I am very lucky to attend a school like all saints and I realise this every time I do the food deliveries. All the people we deliver to live below the poverty line in old, dirty houses most with lots of children and animals. These deliveries make me very grateful for what I have and make me realise how lucky I am to be in the position that I am in.
I would highly recommend doing food deliveries to anyone. It is so rewarding, at the end of each delivery you feel like you have done so much good and it’s so lovely to see the smile on people’s faces when you give them the deliveries they have been waiting for. I always go home feeling happy so I would recommend it to anyone.

Peer Support Alternate Activities

Last year I applied to be a peer support leader for O’Connor. Sadly I didn’t get one of these roles but still got to do some super fun activities while the peer support training was being run. On Monday I started off my day by going on a bus to the river and doing rowing with the rest of O’Connor who didn’t get into peer support. This was a lovely activity run by Ms Rees and the rowing teacher. We were taught the skills of rowing first on land and then we got to go in the water and test out the skills we had learned. It was surprisingly hard to balance in the canoe but after falling in the water a couple of times we headed off to yoga. Yoga was a nice relaxing, afternoon activity where we learnt single, partner and group yoga poses. It was a lot of fun and everyone was laughing by the end of it.

On Tuesday we started off our day by making cookies. These cookies were for Salvation Army who then gave them to homeless people as a little Christmas gift. This was super fun and we got to personalise our cookies to how we wanted them to look. After cookie making, we got to participate in a self-defence workshop run by a coach from out of school. This workshop was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed it a lot. We learnt many skills and even got to practice them on each other. The afternoon activity was my favourite. We got to go down to the ECC (early childhood centre) and be around the little kids for the afternoon, playing with them in the playground, doing crafts and reading Christmas stories. This activity made everyone so happy as the kids were so full of energy and excitement. We started off playing with them in the playgroup which allowed us to meet everyone and even play some chasey. We then helped them make some mini Christmas wreaths and even though we got sticky with glue everyone found it enjoyable. We finished off our afternoon by reading the kid’s Christmas stories and we even had some gingerbread men to finish off a fun day.

I really enjoyed the two-day experience and even though I was originally sad about missing out on peer support I had a really fun two days with my friends. My recommendation to someone who doesn’t make peer support is to take these two days as a bit of fun. The activities make you laugh and have a lot of fun and you get to do it with your friends.

Progress Update 2

This term we began working on our final presentation for our year 10 Hass project, we started by grouping our already founded information and putting it in the categories it goes under, we also expanded this information using the websites we already had. For example, we expanded on each of the schools we found and found the key information that we needed to know like where it is and how much it costs.  We used the school’s website to find out information on K-12 schools and put this into our PowerPoint. We didn’t just want the school names and where they are located, we needed information about the gender of students, the ages of students and the number of students. We need this information because when adults are making a decision about what school to send their children to they look at lots of factors, not just location and price. We started to put all our info into the PowerPoint and linked all the slides so they flowed together.

We are using PowerPoint to present our project as it has a feature that makes it possible to link slides using hyperlinks. Eliza mainly used PowerPoint as she already had the skills and was confident that she could make our project work using this feature. We had some difficulties getting started linking the slides but now everything is working perfectly and we are well on our way to having this feature working for all our slides. My role was to gather all the information together and put it onto the PowerPoint. This week I worked on the information for schools. I wrote stats on the best K-12 schools in Perth and put this on the PowerPoint with a picture of the school.

After our first progress update, we had lots of good feedback that we needed to take into consideration when continuing our project. One main point of feedback from the first update was to clearly outline the main factors that make up a livable city. We did this by writing information on each factor. On the night of the presentation, we will have this information displayed on our table so people can see and understand the factors before moving onto the PowerPoint.

We wanted to add more of a visual element to our project as it is mainly on our computer. We will make this possible by printing a map out on foam board and then using pins to locate the “best” and “worst” suburbs based on all of our factors. We will have statistics linked to those suburbs so people can see why they are the best and worst suburbs

To move we need to finish the PowerPoint. To do this we need to finish the research on all the factors then put it onto the PowerPoint. This will take a lot of work but I’m confident we can finish before the presentation. We also need to link up all the slides so everything works together and people can use the PowerPoint in an interactive way on the night. We also need to print out our information on the factors and do the map so this can be a visual element shown on the night

Hass Project Progress Update 1

As a part of our year 10 humanities course we are able to research a project of our own choice and to create an outcome to showcase at a final exhibition in term 4. The topic that I have chosen to research is geography with my partner Eliza. We are researching the liveability of Perth. To start we first thought I what we wanted to do for our project, we had a couple of ideas but eventually decided on one idea we both really liked. This idea was something interactive that shows the best places to live in Perth. Once we got our idea started filling out the booklet. We wrote out questions we wanted to answer and what capabilities we would use throughout this process. We then worked on and finished our annotated bibliography.

The capabilities we will use are

  • Effective communication as we will need to talk to each other to decided what we are doing and if we are heading in the right direction. We cant just communicate but we need to do it effectively. This means sharing ideas, sharing what we have done and discussing what we still need to do.
  • Problem solving as we will come across challenges and have disagreements and will need to over come them.
  • Organization. We need to be organized with what we are doing so we stay on track and don’t fall behind. We need to plan out what we are doing so we are organized and stick to a plan.
  • Creativity. We have already used this by coming up with our idea. we will need this further next term when we decide how we will present our information.

Moving forward we need to

  • Research more into what people like to do in Perth
  • Research public transport in Perth
  • Research why people like living in Perth
  • Write more research questions along the way as we find out more
  • Research what makes Perth a liveable place

After we have finished all the research we need we will start brainstorming how we will present our findings. We will need to use all our capabilities when we begin and continue to do this. We will work on our project for all the time we have in term 4. We will especially need to be creative during this process because we want to come up with a fun and creative idea we can work on and stick with.

Hot House Instagram Takeover

Earlier this year, during the rehearsing of the school production “MAMMA MIA”, I was given the opportunity to take over the Hot House Instagram for a day to promote the production. This opportunity arose as I am a part of the Arts Council, and someone was needed to promote the production in broader ways. I thought this opportunity was a unique one and I was happy to put my skills into something useful. As part of the takeover, I went to school during the holidays to one of the MAMMA MIA rehearsals and gained access to the Hot House Instagram. I worked alongside Miss Osmetti, and she guided me throughout the day. I created stories, showed behind the scenes videos, took photos of the cast rehearsing and at the end of the day posted on the Instagram account showing exciting pictures I had taken during the day and outlining the efforts the cast and crew had put in during the past few months.

Throughout the day I had to use a lot of creativity to make the stories engaging. I took photos from different angles and in different lighting. I took both photos and videos and used different texts and stickers on the posts to engage the audience in different ways. My work was received with great enthusiasm from multiple members of staff and Mr Mayhill’s described my work as professional and informed me that it was the most impactful work that was produced during the production of MAMMA MIA. I believe I showed great leadership through this experience as I not only stepped up to the opportunity, but I took initiative throughout the day. I worked with new people and teachers and made sure I asked for help when I needed it. This opportunity not only expanded my skills but opened new doors for me as I can now produce more content for Instagram and show others how to work these tools to create exciting and engaging content.

Leadership on Year 9 Camp 2020

In late July we were lucky enough to go to Kalbarri for our year 9 camp. The camp was an adventure camp where every day we walked, went to places around Kalbarri, swam and did team building activities. Here I showed leadership by helping our group make decisions like what we were going to do and when we wanted to do it. This camp was a fun and eventful experience, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.  I think that I improved my Teamwork and Leadership skills through this camp which I am very grateful for.

On camp, there were multiple times where I showed Leadership in my group on camp. In our group, we had a rotation between 4 different subgroups that would help our group out in different groups. The different groups were Cooking, Environment, Hygiene and Leadership. Every day you rotated through a different group. On the first day and night, I was in the Leadership group with Solomon and Alex. We were in charge of making all the decisions for our group about what we wanted to do and when. An example of what we did was on the first day when we got to Kalbarri was deciding to go swimming. We saw another group go down to the river to go for a swim and our group decided we wanted to as well. We wanted to go because it was hot, and we were all cramped for being on the bus and everyone wanted to go swimming. Solomon, Alex, and I made the decision to go swimming then make dinner. Everyone was happy with this decision and everyone was happier than if we just stayed at the camp and made dinner.

The next day we made more decisions that benefited our group. We went to the coastal cliffs, but we decided that we would spend a decent amount of time there but not a lot because we wanted to go back and have a swim. Me, Sol and Alex decided that we wanted to go to Pot Alley beach and Mushroom rock so we could still see some of the cliffs and oceans and have a walk as well as being back in time to pack our stuff and have a swim. Later that night us three decided that we wanted to take our group on a late-night walk to look at the stars. I personally decided we should go to the lookout because there was a waterfall and it was really nice.

I think I showed lots of leadership on this camp and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to go on this incredible camp.

Nulsen

Over the past term and a half, James and I have been working on creating a digital scrapbook that would help the lives of so many people evey day. This project has helped my team work skills and also perserverance. At one point in the project I just felt like giving up and I didnt want to do it any more. I realised that I could help a lot of people and change the lives of a lot of people in a good way. This motivated me to
