InnovatED – Leadership and Effective Communication

This semester in InnovatED, I was apart of the documentary team. Our team had a big responsibility to carry out an effective and engaging video explaining what we had achieved, despite the circumstances and how the other groups performed. I chose to highlight Leadership and effective communication because we had a very special way of showing leadership and an interesting time trying to effectively communicate.

Our leadership wasn’t based on only one person, it was based on what the circumstances were. For example, we would be all working collaboratively then an issue would arise and so one person would take the lead to explain to everybody, then we would go back to being equal.

Effective communication was an interesting point for us. Although we were collaborating together we weren’t communicating properly. For example, I would be working on sorting the videos and so organising who else was helping and what they were doing, then suddenly all my videos would be disappearing because somebody had already sorted them. If we had more time I feel as if we would be able to overcome this issue and work both collaboratively and have good communication.

Textiles Monster

In Textiles 2019, we worked on creating monsters out of felt. First was the design and creative thinking exercise which I struggled with as my skills lie in writing or explaining. We drew up some characters from the movie ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ then moved onto brainstorming creative ideas. I came up with a variety of fun looking monsters. In the next couple of weeks, we drew and cut out coloured fabric to sew. This made me nervous with limited experience on a sewing machine. In this class, I learned how challenging hand sewing was. Relying on the sewing machine enabled me to move on. Looking back now, I didn’t have to take this assessment as seriously as I did. The final products were exhibited in the CPA and I am very proud of my effort and finished product.

China Study Tour 2018

On the 20th of September 2018, I set off to Guangzhou with 16 of my school friends and 5 of my favourite teachers. The trip was an amazing opportunity because I was able to experience being away from home for over 2 weeks including a homestay for 5 days. I was also able to experience school in Shenzhen for 5 days. Throughout those days, I had to learn how to be friends with anyone, if they speak your language or not. We also used lots of different capabilities such as ethics, effective communication, being self-aware and organised. We had to be ethical as we were in another country without our family at age 12 and we were representing our school and our country. We had to make sure we were organised as we had to do our own washing, we had a hotel room that we shared with one other friend and we needed to effectively communicate with English and Mandarin speakers.

Another part of the trip was the exchange. A year prior I had a student come from Shenzhen and stay with me in Perth. It was a strange experience having somebody who didn’t speak any English come and stay in my house but it was an incredibility fun experience. We got to show her around Perth and via Google translate discover our differences and similarities. Even though there was a language barrier we were still friends and had an amazing time. It was easy for her to fit into my weekly plan as she came to school with me and was basically ‘my shadow’ for 3 days.

Overall, this opportunity was fantastic. I grew so much as a person, learned how to be independent, and was able to see some amazing historical sites such as The Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Warriors.

InnovatED Excursion

On Friday the 21st February 2020 my Tutor Group headed to the Salvation Army headquarters to find out what problems we could help them with by looking for solutions. I was already familiar with the space from the other times that I had been there as a volunteer. We toured the space while the staff explained to us the value of what The Salvo’s do, and how many different people they support in the community. We were then led into a Chapel where the Salvo’s representatives outlined some problems The Salvation Army were experiencing and some possible ways we could help. They wanted us to find a better organization system and figure out how to bring an improved aesthetic into the space where it was more welcoming and less factory like for their clients. They also wanted us to fix a project they already started to do with VR. We used the virtues of patience during this excursion, they had a lot to say and we listened to gain a lot of knowledge from them.

A Week in the Life of a Year 7

In 2019, Mr. Port (Head of ICT Integration at All Saints’ College) and Mr. Dahlstrom (Head of Marketing and Community Relations for All Saints’ College) approached me and asked me to film a week in the life of a Year 7. That experience was my first experience working with The Agency (the employment agency for ASC) and the technology and promotion side of anything! Bringing a GoPro around with me everywhere was an amazing task yet challenging as people don’t often behave the same when there is a camera on them. Nevertheless, I still watch back the video with a smile as I remember how much fun it was to film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfVATwxfpp8

Speak Up Awards (Homelessness)

In 2018, I presented a small speech to my class on the growing issue of homelessness. That speech was then chosen to move into the next round to do a school-wide presentation with the goal of electing the three best presentations to go to the state-wide Speak Up Awards. I was lucky enough to be one of those three top speeches.

After a long drive into North Perth, I presented my speech on homelessness to a group of judges and around 100 people. I was incredibly nervous as it was my first time presenting to a group larger than about 70. The top 10 competitors from that moved into a higher competition on a stage and it was a televised event. Unfortunately, I came 11th. This opportunity was still one that I was very thankful to be able to participate in. My speech was something that I was very proud of and these helped as a steppingstone to me getting my 2018 and 2019 leadership roles and my confidence to apply to 2020 leadership roles too.

Health

At the beginning of the term I thought that I was 100% respectful online and responsible with my use of social media. Throughout the lessons I learnt that it was so much more then just not responding to offensive messages or posts but standing up and stopping that behavior (respectfully).

We learnt and discussed Empathy, Respect, Responsibility and Critical Thinking. I think that all these points tie in perfectly and could almost use the same broad definition.

Empathy – Empathy is trying to put yourself in somebodies situation and trying to understand and share the feeling of another. Using empathy in a real life example, somebody makes a post about something going on in his/her family, instead of ignoring or making a comment about overreacting, you could private dm that person and talk about it with them, among them not feel alone during this time.

Respect – respect is the feeling of treating others the way that you would expect to be treated and not disregarding their feelings, thoughts or beliefs because you were told different or you feel as though you are better then them. For example, somebody posts something about their religion, your Muslim friend from school posts about not eating pork, instead of commenting something offensive to their religion you could just comment a heart or something friendly yet supportive.

Responsibility – responsibility is doing the right thing even when nobody is watching. This relates to online behavior by not doing something that your grandparents wouldn’t approve of. For example, you have a responsibility to protect your privacy, passwords, etc.

Critical Thinking – Thinking about all the possible outcomes before you do something. Thinking about the effect on others, on yourself and on everybody in the future. For example, one of your friends gets into a fight and its getting serious, calling for help or stopping it could save a life or a reputation.

I think that the health lessons were engaging and informative 🙂
