Year 9 camp was a great way for me to improve my leadership abilities along with teaching me how to work better as a team. On camp, we stayed in tents at Camp Kalbarri, Four Ways and Z bend. Before we had even left to go on our hike, I had already demonstrated teamwork.

Within the first day that we were at camp, I was chosen out of our group to have responsibility for some organising roles. The first time I had to show some leadership was when we had to go through and choose what food to carry with us, along with who would carry what. This was hard, as people had different preferences along with having to make sure that the fresh food was to be eaten first, such as the tomatoes and lettuce. I had to explain to everyone what food to go and get. This was the first time on camp that I showed leadership. However, there was another time that I had to show some teamwork.

On the second day that we were at Kalbarri, we journeyed into Four Ways, a beautiful place in which three different gorges come to meet. On the hike to get there we encouraged one another to keep on going and we even made sure to stop and rest when people needed it. This allowed us to grow more together as a group.

This camp taught me how much some teamwork can help push you and drive you. This is from times when people didn’t want to go on any more or was upset, and needed encouragement. This was shown when we were entering the gorge, as it was steep terrain. We had to use teamwork to explain to each other how to get down safely. So from this I will take that “teamwork makes the dreamwork”, as the phrase goes.

There was a lot of times at which we had to work as a team such as setting up camp, hiking and when we were abseiling. However, one that stood out to me was when we were having to cook dinner at night. For this, we were having to work in groups of four, and therefore I had to show some teamwork. In our group each member all got a different role, however, my role was to get the food, along with just helping anyone who needed it. This helped me learn some teamwork as I just helped people who needed it, this role is one that I will take into the future. It allows people to receive help when they need it.

Year 9 camp taught me many things, but most importantly it taught me that teamwork and leadership allows people to do so much more.
