This Maths project that we have done was to do about the sustainability of our planet. We have looked at the C02 that is produced from different types of transport. We mainly looked at trains, diesel cars, electric cars and buses. We looked at this from a mathematical perspective, via looking at different graphs and statistics that is provided from, Our World in Data, the UK government along with the Australian government.

One thing that really surprised me as I was doing the work was that petrol cars released more C02 than diesel cars. Diesel cars also are a lot more fuel efficient which means that it will also be cheaper to have a diesel car. Even though this is the case more registered cars are petrol. We need to start promoting the use of diesel car over petrol if we want to be able to reduce our C02 production.

Another thing that shocked me was the percentage of people that took the car to work. This is a lot harder than what it should/has to be. I feel like if a place like Sydney can have 20% of people going to work through public transport than we can do it in Perth.

Overall we found that making sure that you are catching the train is a lot better for the environment. Although we also saw the dramatic effect that carpooling can have on the amount of C02 released.

UP: Preserving the Environment

I have learnt a lot about how it is important to look at an issue from mathematical and statistical point of view. If I was to look at this problem without checking the data I would have just assumed that the best transportation for the planet would be an electric. I also learnt about the importance of ensuring that you don’t just collect your data from one place. As companies can be biased towards which statistics that they show.

Overall this project taught me lots of important things that I will take into the future.
