Utopia project

During term 2 and 3 year 7 worked on a utopia project where we had to create a close to perfect and sustainable world. This project incorporated a lot of subjects such as English, science, humanities and innovatED.

We started off this whole process by doing the giver the project. The idea of the story was about a perfect world where nothing could possibly go wrong. A utopia. By reading this story we discovered that the givers world is a dystopian community. I found out that not everything is perfect and for our utopia we can’t make it perfect, but we can make it as close to that as possible. For example there will probably still be homeless people throughout the utopia but we can put in homeless shelters to cater for them.

In humanities we focused on the livability factors and sustainability. Everyone must research on building community, environmental quality and one of our choice. For building community we had to think about how the members of our utopia would befriend others, so we introduced housing area’s for people with similar interests like footy. For environmental quality we needed to have things in the utopia to make it sustainable like a wind farm or solar panels. Finally, my group chose to do healthcare and education, we put in a lot of schools and universities for different needs so our utopia can function.

In science we were partnered up to create a sustainable house. My partner and I had to involve things in our house such as water and energy saving features and behaviors. This was an introduction in how to make a place sustainable. I discovered other ways to make energy that isn’t just solar or wind but hydro energy and geothermal energy. Which we then put into the utopia for our energy saving area.

For the foundation of the utopia I had to research what he had to have in our utopia. I researched different constitutions to see what rules we had to implement in our utopia. I had to research the global goals to see what each of them mean and how we could involve them in our utopia.

Through the utopia we had to have a constitution which is a rule book. I looked at different countries and their constitutions like Australia, America and England because different countries follow different laws and they may not be a monarchy or a democracy. So, I had to decide what type of government system I was going to have and we had to create laws for the citizens and members of our community so if there is any misbehaving there will be rules for what they did. For the global goals our group had to order the importance of the goals. Then for our utopia we were able to get accreditations. To get them we need to address and define the goal. My group got accreditations for goals 4, 6, 7 and 10.

These are the cards we got for getting an accreditation. Once we had defined and addressed the goal we were given one of these to show that we have gotten the accreditation for the global goal.
This photo is of the global goals in order of how important we thought they were. Our group had to order the global goals in how important we thought they’d be to help the world.

We then had to work on the PVLEGS for English which allowed us to practice our speaking techniques like poise, voice, life, eye contact, gestures and speed. We had to create a 2 minute speech that summed up our utopia. We talked about the different global goals we had and other objects throughout or utopia such as sustainable features. This talk was mostly a practice for the showcase where we had to present to family’s and guests about our utopia.

We had the decision and opportunity to make an online or physical model. My group made ours out of plasticine models and paper. We created one of each main place out of plasticine like one house and one place of worship then the rest out of paper to show roughly how many we were going to have if the utopia was real. My group decided to use a physical model because we thought we could present it and be able to explain it easier than going through our computer screen.

These are just a few of the plasticine models we made for our utopia. you can see a tree, a place of worship, a solar panel, a wind turbine, a hospital and a restaurant.

This utopia project was a great learning process. I learned about different ways to be sustainable, the deeper meaning behind stories, the different constitutions and what some of the global goals are. I found this experience amazing because it has been different as we have had more hands on experiences and the project has gone over multiple terms.

This is our final result of our sustainable utopia.
