HASS Project Year 10 Update 2

As a part of our Year 10 HASS course, we are able to create a project about a topic of our own choice and to create a final product to showcase at the exhibition in Week 6 Term 4. The topic that I have chosen to research is “How political tactics and methods have changed over time.” So far, we have completed a script for our documentary. We aim to finalise this script and start the filming process of the documentary next week. We will then edit the documentary and add some information to display about the documentary at the exhibition, to inform people when it will be playing on the CPA projector. The feedback we received last time was mostly positive, and we will make sure that the documentary follows our topic, and is engaging to the audience, and inform them about the research and the facts we found out about whilst working on the project. We have planned our timeline, and we should be able to finish our project in time for the exhibition.

Hass Project Year 10

As part of our Year 10 Humanities course, we are able to research a project of our own choice and to create an outcome to showcase at a final exhibition in Term 4. The topic that I have chosen to research is how political tactics and methods have changed over time. Our main focus area is Civics. The steps I have completed so far are that I have completed the bibliography, and the script for the documentary is a work in progress. Our plan for continuing our project includes finishing completing the script, filming the documentary, and editing the documentary.

Developing My Leadership Capability In English

Throughout my English course in 2021, I have developed some of my capabilities that have helped me become a more developed person. The major capability that I developed throughout one of my English assessments was my leadership skills. I had to develop this skill throughout my last assessment because it was a group assessment. My latest assessment was a dramatic performance about bullying that lead to suicide which was performed in groups of four which was Xavier, Daniel, Kyle and myself. Before our assessment, I would have had trouble getting people to work on certain tasks. During the task, I put it upon myself to become the leader of the group, and motivate my group members, to do specific parts of the script. After our group presented I thought that we went pretty well because we were mostly organised with our costumes and props, and due to the leadership skills that I developed we had everything done. I also believe that my leadership capability developed the most by checking in with what people haven’t done and what we needed to bring as a group. To elaborate on this point Before the weekly check-ups I would go over the work that was needed to be complete and check on what was needed to be changed or removed/added. After the check-ups, I would tell our group what I changed and ask them if they wanted it to add a bit more. Throughout the project, my leadership capability developed and allowed me to become a better leader in and outside of school.

Everything I Did in Muir 2021, Snorkeling Course

Throughout the first semester, I went through a class called Muir. Muir is an outdoor ed class where we went through three different courses, Snorkeling (First term), archery (Fridays of Term 2), and orienteering (Wednesday of Term 2). During the First term of the Semester, our class went over different techniques that we could use in our end of term trip to Rottnest. For most of our first lessons, we were just going to our own aquatic centre and testing our swimming skills with a snorkel, mask, and fins. Most of us always brought our stuff but there was always one or two people that didn’t bring anything. After 2 or 3 weeks of working on our skills in the pool, we moved out into Coogee and did a snorkel trail. We went out for three trips to Coogee, one trip per week, on Wednesday morning 8:30 – 10:20. For more information look at the power-point below.

Power-point: Bartels_Joshua_Snorkeling_PPT.pptx

Our trip to Rottnest.

Our class was one of three, and for the trip out we were separated into our classes when it was our rotation to snorkel. Each class had two rotations to snorkel in the Rottnest Basin where we had our stuff up on the shore. Each rotation was 40 mins long and had a 1 hour and 20 min break between each rotation of snorkelling. While we were on the shore waiting for our rotation again, we could have played beach cricket, but the tide was up for the entire day, and we could only play on the bike path that was near our stuff. Also, throughout the day we only saw one Quakka, and that was when we were packing up to leave.

Skills and Hand Signals

Throughout the first few lessons, we went through different hand signals and different skills we could use at Rottnest. We had to learn the hand signals to tell other classmates’ information throughout the open ocean. If we had a hand places on our head, it means are you ok, and the response is the same action. If the teacher wants us to go out further, then they would put two hands up in the air. One hand up means that you need to stop, and one hand on the left/right means to go that way. One hand up in a fist means to go to that person. Some of the skills that we went through were, to duck dive correctly and to learn how to clear out our mask underwater. The best way to duck dive is to take 3 or 4 deep breathes to hold your breath and do a whale dive. To clear out your mask underwater, you would need to hold your breath and tilt your mask upwards, so the mask has opened the bottom and then you breathe out of your nose to push the water out.

Capabilities

At the start of the term, I wanted to improve on my organisational capabilities. I have developed this skill through the course by remembering the excursions we had went on and the items we needed to bring. The main way that I was organized/prepared for the excursions was to pack what I needed the night before. Another capability I have improved upon is creativity, I have developed this skill throughout this course as well. The main ways I did this was to try and think of different scenarios that would come up and try to solve them for example if I were on the bus and I realized that I forgot to bring something, for example, sunscreen, that I needed I would produce a solution like borrowing some form, someone else. The final Capability that I developed through this course, was Problem Solving. I improved this capability by solving any problem that came up in my way before if I forgot my sunscreen, I would ask someone else if I can borrow any.

Sustainability/Leave No Trace

Our class had a key principle, which was to Leave No Trace (LNT). The LNT principle meant that we would need to respect the environment and not leave anything behind as in, not to leave any rubbish behind. Another way we respected the environment was to look out for any pieces of rubbish and then if there were any put them in the bin. The LNT principle is important because we need to look after the places we go and protect the environment where we can.

At the start of term two, we had to learn about different powers and we would have to use one or more of these powers to help solve the real-life problems that different organizations came out to us with. The problem our group had to solve was with RAAFA and we would have to help solve the problem which was to deliver food to the disabled residents that cannot leave their room and want food.  We also had created a graph of the powers that we thought were useful and how well we had used them.  But the average of the powers for me was;  Communication was 6.4 out of 10, Teamwork was 8, Self-management was 7.4, Problem-solving was 7.9 and Creativity was 8.5.
