My Experience at Camp

In the year 2020, I attended a school camp at Kalbarri. When I left for camp as a Year 9 student, I had only just settled in to my new school and I did not yet know the people that I would be camping with. Meeting my camping group was difficult for me as I was ‘the new kid’ and nobody knew me yet. However, by the end of the trip I had made strong new connections with my teammates. By embracing the experience of camp and exploring beautiful Kalbarri with my group, I had an great time and discovered my strengths as both a teammate and a leader.

How I Used Teamwork at Camp

It is my belief that the ability to work well in a team and demonstrate teamwork is important in any group setting. Within the large camp group, cooking groups consisting of four people where made to split up the work that needed to be done on camp. These groups were in charge of preparing their own meals while in the bush and it took teamwork to properly cook the dinners.

In order to get everything prepared in a timely manner, everyone in a cooking group must work together. My group devised a system that helped us to organize our cooking jobs by dividing the work and giving each of us a specific role at dinner time. One of us would use the cooking pot, actually cooking the food. Two of us would chop up the vegetables ready to add to the cooking pot. The last of us would collect the ingredients we needed and find the equipment that we needed.

My ability to work in a team helped me to be useful to my team. I was able to find a way to help my teammates before they had to ask, greatly speeding up the process of doing chores while on camp. I lent a hand to the other groups when they were falling behind and when it was time to break camp of set up our tents in a new location. Setting up and packing down the tents required at least three people to communicate well and coordinate to get the tent done as quickly as possible, resulting in sleeping groups having to be smart about their teamwork strategies.

How I Became a Leader at Camp

Leadership roles were assigned to every cooking group at camp and it was the responsibility of the group to work together in order to complete their jobs on time. Within my group I exhibited leadership as I delegated tasks and managed the progress of my teammates, allowing our group to finish our jobs quickly. My leadership skills pushed the group through and helped other people who were lagging behind or struggling when we had to move quickly to complete an activity. Towards the end of the camp, I found my voice and was able to share my ideas within my group and offer suggestions for how we should carry out the activities we did on the program.

As a result of the incredible experience at camp, I grew close to my teammates and learnt important lessons about the importance of good teamwork when working in a group.
