This year I am a part of the Anglicare Ambassadors, a group of Year 10s who work with Anglicare WA to raise funds and awareness for their cause. The program runs in many Anglican schools around WA, and on the evening of the 20th May, All Saints hosted an advocacy training program. This evening was really cool and I feel super lucky to have been able to attend.  We had a couple of guest speakers, first was two people from Anglicare who spoke to us about what advocacy really is and how we can be better advocates for causes we believe in. The second guest speaker was a writer who shared with us her story, and how she is an advocate through her spoken word poetry. I absolutely loved listening to her speak, she performed one of her poems for us which was amazing, and the things she was saying about how she found her voice and came to terms with herself was really inspiring. In the second half of the event we got into smaller groups and had some time to design a plan for advocating a cause that is important to us. I feel like I actually got quite a bit out of the activity, its purpose wasn’t to get us to develop a full, detailed plan for action but more to get us thinking about how we can start to make a difference. The main idea from the day that resonated with me most was how we don’t need to focus on massive issues, we can be advocates for what is important to us, even if other people might not consider it as important.
