For the last 20 weeks, the $20 Boss program has allowed us to design and create ideas, giving us an opportunity to grow in our world, our community, and ourselves.
$20 Boss is a program that All Saint’s has set up as a part of the InnovatED curriculum. It allows students to design and ideate their own products and business, focusing on the journey as well as the outcome. To help create our products and business, we all completed a design sprint challenge –
This aided us in defining what our ideas were, how we were going to make it work, and who our target audience was. My project partner and I worked hard at the challenge, and completed it in the assigned time.
At the beginning of my InnovatED journey, I set out on my own. However, shortly after, I received an offer – to join another student with an excellent idea.
For our project, we decided to make eco-friendly garden stakes. This required us to work hard at designing the stakes, downloading them into adobe illustrator, and laser cutting. The journey to create these simple garden stakes was a long one. We had to practice effective communication, problem solving, and remain resilient and organized when things weren’t going to plan. And lots of things were unclear. In the beginning, we were unsure of what material to use, what vegetable designs to make, and how to actually put it all together. However, everything sorted itself out in the many hours we spent empathizing, defining, ideating, and prototyping. At first, we thought that maybe we wouldn’t sell the garden stakes. Maybe we would just give them to the aquaponics team. In the end, we set up at the market in the Centre of Performing Arts and sold almost all the wonderful designs we had made. We created them in three sizes, two of which you could place pre-orders on. Thank you to all the lovely people who bought our garden stakes! It really made a difference, and now there will be no doubt that, if we continue this project, we will sell again.
