Role models and me

My house of values

Faith

To trust someone is to have belief in the ability or truth of a person or thing but to have faith is to put complete confidence in someone or something. I think everyone needs to have faith in at least one thing in their life because when something bad happens they can depend on that one thing. I am religious so I think it’s important to have faith and confidence that your belief is right.

Wisdom

The difference between Intelligence and wisdom is that wisdom is to learn from your experience and adapt to your environment so you don’t make the same mistake. I think learning from your experience is important because you wouldn’t want to do the same mistake again so you would need to learn from the mistake. I think it’s ironic that to get more wisdom you’ll need to make more mistakes.

Love

I think love is an interesting subject because a lot of the time if you say love people my age would just go ew and change the subject. I feel like love is both over popular and underrated at the same time. I think love is represented wrong a lot of the time in both movies and songs. It doesn’t always have to be sexual and a world without love just doesn’t feel right.

Healthy Role Model

Walt Disney

Walt Disney

Walt Disney is famous for making his animations and designing the Disney Land theme park. He showed perseverance in making his cartoons when his first studio shut down but continued to work hard and make more animations. He even studied cartooning in high school which shows just how passionate he was because back then animators and artists never made much money. During world war I he tried to forge his way into the army but was rejected so he tried supporting the soldiers by drawing cartoons and comics for the army newspaper.

I think Walt Disney is a healthy role model who shows that many things can be achieved through hard work and perseverance. He also demonstrates the need to hold on to your dreams and that achieving them isn’t always impossible but he is human and there still are some unhealthy aspects of him. Walt Disney was aware of the two aspects of him he created, one for the public eye to see and one not. He once said to a friend  ” I’m not Walt Disney, I do a lot of things Walt Disney wouldn’t do. Walt Disney doesn’t smoke. I smoke. Walt Disney doesn’t drink. I drink.” Walt knew he wasn’t perfect and if you are a celebrity you had to keep up the persona of being a perfect human being to keep the respect you fought so hard to earn. I respect it because the way society sees some of these celebrities and famous people isn’t fair They should be allowed to make mistakes after working really hard to achieve their dreams.

Walt Disney himself promotes many good values but so do his movies and films. A lot of his stories are about being true to yourself and being kind to others. This can be seen in a lot if the Disney princess stories. Most of his animations are family-friendly and teach children important lessons that they will carry on into adulthood. I think young people should look into him more often and not just his movies because it shows just how high the standards are for celebrities and how we sometimes treat them as perfect human beings when they’re not. I think it was very interesting the way Walt presented himself in public views differs a lot when he was by himself and I wonder how many other celebrities are like this.

Walt Disney demonstrates a lot of the values in my house, particularly perseverance and passion. He also showed a lot of wisdom in learning from his experiences and adapting to the changing environment.

Unhealthy role model

Dazai Osamu

Dazai Osamu

Dazai Osamu was a well known Japanese author. A lot of his works like ‘No Longer Human’ and ‘The Setting Sun’ are modern classics. Dazai Osamu died by committing suicide with one of his lovers by drowning himself in a river near where he lived. This wasn’t the first time he tried to commit suicide and throughout his life, he has attempted to take his life 5 times. Throughout his life, Dazai Osamu has gotten addicted to both drugs and alcohol multiple times which resulted in him being in debt and having to beg money off his siblings. His book ‘ No Longer Human’ is similar to an autobiography as the main character goes through many of the things he has gone through.

Dazai Osamu’s books no longer human’ and ‘the setting sun’ both talk about the changes in japan and how it’s grown more accustomed to western culture and how young people are slowly abandoning the traditional Japanese way. I think this is a positive message but the way it’s done isn’t that healthy. The book shows many struggles but no motivation to get help or find a way to solve the problem. It is pretty dark and pessimistic.

I think it’s wrong to label a person bad unless you truly understand the person and how they feel. I think if I were in the same situation as some of these celebrities on TV who are labelled ‘bad’ I think I’d end up way worse than some of them. I think young people should consider the person more before they decide whether they’re good or bad. I think now that I look into Dazai Osamu more I understand him more and I’m changing my first impression of him. I think young people shouldn’t look up to Dazai Osamu but they should also keep in mind that they themselves may or may not be better off because they don’t fully understand what his hardships felt like.

There hasn’t been much on Dazai Osamu so the best way to get an impression of him is to read his books and judge if media is right based off what you’ve read in his books.
