Road safety campaign

What were the biggest things you learnt at the RACbstreetsmart excursion?

I learnt the serious impacts of a car crash including physical injury, emotional damage, trauma, financial cost and legal repercussions. I also learnt about the procedures that follow a serious crash and the aftermath of victims of a serious crash.

What is one piece of advice that you would pass on the young drivers and why?

One piece of advice that I would pass on to young drivers is to always prioritize safety while on the road. This means driving defensively, obeying traffic laws and speed limits, wearing a seatbelt, and avoiding distractions while driving, such as texting or using a cellphone. Additionally, it’s important to regularly maintain your vehicle and ensure that it is in good working condition before getting behind the wheel. Remember, driving is a privilege and with it comes the responsibility to keep yourself and others safe on the road.

I give this advice because following safe driving practices can greatly reduce the risk of a crash and help ensure the safety of the driver and their passengers, as well as other drivers. By driving defensively and obeying traffic laws, young drivers can also avoid risky behaviors like speeding, aggressive driving, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which are major contributors to car crashes.

Write down a pledge that you will commit to when you start driving:

I pledge to prioritize safety while on the road by:

  1. Always wearing a seatbelt, and ensuring that my passengers do the same.
  2. Never driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and never getting in a vehicle with someone who is.
  3. Obeying traffic laws and speed limits, and driving defensively to avoid accidents.
  4. Avoiding distractions while driving, such as texting or using a cellphone.
  5. Regularly maintaining my vehicle and ensuring that it is in good working condition before getting behind the wheel.

I commit to these things because driving is a privilege and with it comes the responsibility to keep myself and others safe on the road. I understand that driving can be dangerous and that accidents can happen at any time, but I believe that by following these safety guidelines, I can greatly reduce the risk of accidents and make the road a safer place for everyone. By making safety a top priority, I can help ensure that I and others arrive at our destinations safely and without incident.
