The Process

My and my class went through a long process to create our final product but every step wasd worth it. We started by looking at some of the main principles of art. From memory, some of them were: Repetition, shape, balance, movement, and a whole bunch others. After that we looked at some of the great wood artists in history. We even has to write a response on Louise Nevelson, a wood and steel artist from the 19th century. Next we started drafting and playing around with different pieces of wood. Eventually, we all settled on an idea. One of my previous designs is to the right.

Organisation

I think that for the main project, my workload each lesson was appropriate so I was finished by the end. What I really want to talk about is the Louise Nevelson response. The response was due three weeks from the day is was set. I had it finished before the first week. I felt confident with the entire experience of the response and I was glad to have a little bit more stress removed from my life. My final response is on the left.

Inquizitive

My design started as a small symmetrical star. I then saw the size of the canvas and decided to make it a bit bigger. From the start, I always wanted to have a symmetrical, star looking piece. That was my initial design. Then I started layering up, complicating the design a bit. After that stage (top middle) the design still looked a bit small so I stretched down and up. After that, I was happy, but the design still looked small. So, in order to increase the size of it, I made my artwork stretch out to the sides and up from the canvas. After looking at what would be my concluding product, I was finally pleased with myself. I would hope that in this piece of art, I have including shape and repetition. This is because, all the design is many identical shapes, repeated to make on larger shape.

Problem Solving

For me, the main thing that I wanted in my design was symmetry. In my eyes, I think that this is something that has worked well for me. From the beginning, I knew that I wanted my piece to be symmetrical. However, the good thing about using multiple of the same shape is that it is easier to make something symmetrical. One thing that wasn’t working for we was the size of the design. I wanted the points of it to be sticking of the edges. When I was at the second design (see inquizitive) I wasn’t sure how to build out from it more, without changing how it looked. And that is the other good thing about using the same shape repetitively. It is easy to attach more pieces onto the side or the front. I am now sure that repeating the use of the same shape was a good decision because it helped me to overcome many challenges.

Creative

This was my final product. I am very proud of what this winding path has lead to.
