The giver
At the start of the year, we studied the book ‘The Giver. We read it by ourselves at home. At school, Mr Wong chose pieces of the book to focus on. We looked at the community’s rules, rituals and strange things. We drew how we perceived the layout of the world of the giver. We later connected all of this to the Fremantle project, deciding what pieces were important in the community, and what to dismiss.
Measuring the liveability of our suburb
After the giver, we learned about the rights and wrongs of the factors of livability. We learned about the differences between Subjective and Objective factors. We then completed a map survey of our area. We noted what was in the 3km range around us. We then wrote a paragraph about our suburb. This was mine. Bull creek is a wonderful suburb for young families to live in. There are many good schools, such as All Saints and Rossmoyne, and many nice kid-friendly parks. If you live in bull creek, most people are companionable and will go out of their way to say good morning or good evening. The people in Bull creek are very genial. There are many lovely locations situated around Bull Creek. The local area has many phenomenal sporting opportunities, restaurants, shops, lakes etc. You have the opportunity to meet more people who share similar interests with you. Bull creek is full of affable people, with lovely places.
Groupwork- Vision Board
After this, we were put into groups of three and four. I was with Corbyn and Val. We worked together to come up with ideas for our project utopia. Together we came up with our vision board. We displayed our three main ideas on a board after working on them for about half of a term.
Report
After the vision board, we created a whole report, in detail, explaining our ideas. Project Utopia Report.docx We showed how our ideas of an underwater restaurant, an Artificial reef and a bike and bus program would fit into Fremantle. We asked ourselves, is it sustainable? Is it feasible? Does it bring importance to Fremantle? And many other questions. Slowly we ticked off every one of our questions to get to where we are now.
Switch groups for new ideas
After a long time of working on our report and vision board in the same group, we switched groups. We came up with ideas that could build on our previous ideas or change them. Mine stayed the same.
Final group
We then switched groups again, but for the last time. We targeted different areas and worked on one idea as a group. My group was focusing on transport. A tram was our main idea. We designed where the tram would go in Fremantle. We put a lot of work into this. In these groups, we created a model of how Fremantle would look both on Co space, an online website and on a physical board. There were seven different boards for each group. We worked on all pieces as the tram will run through all of Fremantle. Our main board showed where the central station would be and what will be located around the station.
Speech
In the same groups, we created a speech concluding the project. We told our ideas in detail and sold them to our parents. THE SPEECH WAS ON MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! We had to retell our speech to different groups of parents (ON MY BIRTHDAY). We spoke the speech around five times. We got good questions and areas for improvement from the parents. Our project ended there.
