ASC Capabilities

Our ASC capabilities guide us in our learning and skill building. Throughout Muir I have extended my ability to hold these capabilities and improved many of them including organisation, collaboration and effective communication. I improved my organisation throughout this course as I have to keep track of excursions and making sure I bring everything I need to each lesson. I also improved my collaboration and effective communication as all 3 activities we did included either of those. In snorkelling, we have to use effective communication underwater in order to keep each other safe and understood on what is happening. both of the capabilities are equally as important in orienteering as you have to communicate well with your team and help each other out by collaborating.

Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace is a key concept in all outdoor ed programs and any time out of school. Using the Leave No Trace concepts allows us to keep our environment intact and safe from any human harm, especially endangered species. We utilised LNT a lot in this course since our orienteering and snorkeling takes place in vibrant and live environments that need to be kept clean in order to keep flourishing. These LNT concepts includes; Leave what you find, respecting wildlife and and disposing of waste properly. Each of those are used to keep our surroundings clean and left better then we found. Leaving what you find keeps the environment safe as anything you touch or keep could be an animals home or an endangered species could need it to survive. Respecting wildlife such as birds, insects and fish is important as we do not want to potentially harm them or scare them. Finally, properly disposing of waste is a key concept as littering has become an extremely large issues in many areas. In order to do our part, we must take care of our rubbish and get rid of it correctly. A few things we did on camp to uphold these were not feeding the quokkas, cleaning up our campsites and staying on the designated tracks.
