Camp Overview

Camp was a week long trip to Kalbarri in 4 separate groups. We did lots of fun activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, swimming and cooking. This camp was extremely fun and I was so happy spending time with my friends in the gorges. Throughout the camp, I also demonstrated a lot of skills such as teamwork, communication and organisation, as these were key skills needed to stay organised and have fun throughout the week. The activities this camp required my to stay resilient, active, calm and more.

Teamwork

Pretty much all of the activities we did required a large form of teamwork, especially abseiling and cooking. This was in forms of talking each other through things, spreading work evenly, working to be efficient and more.

Cooking was an activity that require as much teamwork and communication as possible. Things like dividing work and cleaning needed a lot of communication as well, but teamwork allowed us to get things done quicker so we could eat before it got too dark and give us more downtime. It also allowed us to be more prepared and on schedule for the day. Our teamwork helped us get things like chopping and dishwashing which made everyone’s experience so much better.

Another thing that required teamwork was setting up and packing down our tents, as one person would not be able to do it quickly or well. We helped each other put up poles, lay down the layers and put pins into the ground. Dividing the work and helping each other out allowed us to get it done super quickly which also allowed for extra chill time.

Communication

Communication came in many forms on this camp but it came in very handy throughout. Communication was necessary for many things like ingredient collection or telling each other when and where to go, but more importantly we needed it for our rock climbing and abseiling.

In abseiling, we needed to tell each other if there was anything in the way, or if someone is in the way. More specifically, we had to tell each other if there was a falling rock or some debris, so that people could move out of the way. We also had to encourage each other when going down, as many were scared to go. When we went rock climbing, we followed similar means of communication, as well as added call outs. These included things like; “belayer ready, climber ready” and other indicators which helped us to effectively communicate and understand each other, especially since the belayers could not see the rock climbers due to the cliff edge. We also had to warn each other about the rocks and which places can support your feet/hands.
