Brutalist Art project🎨

Brutalism- But… What is it?

Brutalism is a style of art which is most commonly used in architecture. It is made of cement creating a simple, block-like structure. In Term 1, we created small brutalist moulds and created a ‘city’, using everyone’s artworks. This is my reflection and experience of the term. Here, I will tell you about the challenges and successes I experienced over the last couple of weeks.

Everyone’s Moulds on Display!

This project was exciting because we could make moulds and create interesting sculptures using cement. I found it challenging when you had to cut out the corflute. It was quite difficult to cut it out using the Stanley knife. It was also challenging to have no leaks in the walls. It required a substantial amount of hot glue so the water wouldn’t leak. Even though there were several different challenges throughout this task, I always met the time requirements and worked efficiently throughout the entire term to make sure my project was a high quality. I completed the portfolio tasks, several moulds, and now, a reflection. I worked efficiently and also had fun.

I didn’t want to have any overhangs in my design because I thought it would be challenging to take it out of the mould. I made my design based of my three trials in the beginning of the term. I did it a couple of times to ensure that it would come out correctly and look good. I used the neon Lego pieces. I made my design quite large because I thought it would look nicer. After creating my design, I then measured the dimensions for the corflute and cut them out. This was a difficult aspect of the process. We then hot glued the walls onto a wooden board. We had to hot glue several layers to ensure that the liquids won’t leak. Then, we created the moulds using Pinky-Sil. You had to leave the moulds to set over the nest few days. Then we took the mould out of the walls. It had an elastic/bouncy texture. Then, we poured the grey cement into the mould to create an interesting, brutalist sculpture. I made a total of 5 moulds, all of which turned out looking quite nice.

All my moulds worked out well. The only thing that didn’t work out perfectly for me was the hot gluing of the walls. The water kept leaking out even after several tries. It required a lot of hot glue for the walls to hold their place without leaking. Also, my mould was rather big which meant it required a lot of cement. This wasn’t much of a problem though.

My overall design was a success! It was quite a lengthy process however the end result was worth it!❤
