This year, the year 9 cohort went on a six day trip to Kalbarri. The cohort was split into 2 rotations then in further groups. As a result of this it was rare to have a group full of friends, at first this was very bad as I was not as comfortable as I would be if I was with my friends. This later turned out to helpful as it actually made me get better at getting closer to people that I have not met before.

Camp taught me a lot about leadership as there were many opportunities where I could to lead others, for example cooking dinner, I was usually in charge of cooking so every now and then I had to make sure that my group members knew what they had to do but also setting up the Trangia correctly arranged so the food could be cooked correctly. There were also team building exercises that helped me get better at leading a group. I was the leader for one of the two teams in a game of volleyball with changed rules, and I feel like I led my team well, we still lost the game after the other team had an impressive comeback.

Another example of leadership in camp was when on the first day when we were setting our tents up, it was a lot easier to set up the tents when someone was taking lead and telling the others what to do rather than everyone else doing their own thing which is a lot less efficient because some people will finish earlier than the others and will not know what they need to do.

The last example of how important leadership was at camp, was when we had to make wraps for our lunch. If everyone made their own wrap by themselves then it would take a lot longer and the food wouldn’t be split evenly, so we decided to nominate people to make the wraps that way the others could explore the gorge while the people making the food could make us lunch. This was also an example of team building because the people preparing the food had to work together.

Leadership is important in life as it vastly helps with getting jobs and solving real life problems. Being able to lead others well is what will set you apart from all the other people.
