The Sleek Geeks competition is a competition that is performed around the whole of Australia and for all years under the ages of 18 and over the age of 6. The Sleek Geeks completion is run/presented by the University of Sydney. The competition is in small groups (of around 2-4) where you are to make a short video (less than 2minutes) about a certain topic, this year the topic was ‘change’. The video was to then be given to your teacher and they would see if it was good enough to send to the Sleek Geeks video company. The idea of the competition is to communicate a scientific concept/s in a way that is accessible and entertaining to the public while increasing their scientific knowledge in a way that is fun.
The videos, once sent to the company are watched and reviewed. They are then marked on the scientific knowledge that is communicated to the viewers. Once all of the videos have been viewed and assessed by the judges, there are three place winners. The first-place winner receives a total of $3000, second place gets $2000, and third place gets $1000.

My experience
For this year’s theme, it was ‘change’, so our group decided to make a video about animal adaptations. My group consisted of Charlotte Bailey, Isabella Podesta, and Stephanie Masaryk. Our group was very efficient with what we needed to do, we were always on task and knew what would have to be done in that lesson so that we could stay on top of the project. We all contributed to the group in our way, I wrote the script, and then the others gave feedback and edited parts they thought should be changed.
If we were allowed to redo the project and make it better, I think our group probably could have done better in filming and costumes. Although we made the costumes with what we had, they were not very creative. And in some places of our video, it was a little blurry and the words were harder to hear over the noise in the background. But other than those few minor things our group did quite well.
Some disagreements that our group had come across while doing the project was that at the start we were unsure what topic we wanted to base our video on. To resolve this, we each gave our thoughts on why we should do that topic and then agreed that ‘animal adaptations’ were the best one for us to do. If we were to repeat this project I do not think that I would want to do anything different in this aspect as we work quite well together.
Our efficiency
On the timeline that we were given, our group worked very efficiently and was able to finish the video on time. We had made a plan so that we would know who’s parts we would be filming in which lessons so that we knew when to bring costumes and where we would need to be for the filming.
