Maths – Save The Human

As part of the Methods course for year 9 maths, we had to work in a group to develop a resource that involves communicating mathematically and sustainability. We had to choose a topic that covers two or three of the key pillars of sustainability. These pillars are economic, environmental and social. For our project, we chose the topic of the gender pay gap, as it covers both the economic and social pillars. We decided to present our data in an infographic.

In our infographic, we defined the gender pay gap, identified how the topic connects to sustainability, included a graph that shows relative data and provided an analysis for said graph.

Overall, I believe that my group could have worked better by dividing up the roles and being more productive during class time, but I am happy with our final product. This project has helped me to learn that when maths is involved, we need to be careful and find a good way to communicate the information without it becoming confusing. I think using an infographic was a good way to do this as it provides data alongside a clear explanation which helps people to understand what’s happening.

Throughout this task, I also learnt a lot about sustainability and in order for our world to continue on, we need to maintain the equality between the three pillars. This taught us how environmental was not the only factor of sustainability and that economic and social are also vital parts of it.

Finally, I think this project was a good learning opportunity. This is because it is preparing us for real-life situations we might face in the future that require the same skill set as this project.
