The Kalbarri experience

“Brothers in spirit a bond forever unbroken.”

The cool and crazy camp located at Kalbarri developed critical capabilities such as responsibility having empathy for others, that I will use in my everyday life. My camp group was divided into 4 subgroups that rotated every day, this being the hygiene group, The camp crafter group, the leaders, and the cooking group. Each sub-group had about 4 or 5 members that were responsible for their own set responsibilities. At the start of each day, our rotation put our minds together and set out the whole day by dividing it into sections, morning, midday, and afternoon.

The time where I demonstrated leadership is when I was the leader with 3 other people on the third day, I knew what my responsibilities were and had to organize all the camp rotations paths, safety, and their feelings. Making sure everyone was safe was our number one challenge and we overcame that by constantly communicating with each other during the hikes like Chinese whisperers. I had taken a dangerous risk to predict when people need to have a break which demonstrated my empathy for others as people could get tired at different times, so we would do a rough estimate being having a break every 8 minutes. It was challenging at first, but I quickly overcame this as I understood everyone based on the positive relations I built during camp.

“Me and my camp group mate Lachlan having my back helping me cross the river”

When no one took up the responsibility for I would always be there to assist and accompany my peers, and that was the relationship I had with all my peers, I had their back, they had mine.  Looking back at the experience of Kalbarri, the camp has helped thoroughly develop my leadership skills and helped me connect the capabilities that I already have and the capabilities I learned to build this new me.
