In Term One, we began a project called $20 boss. This project entails getting into a group of up to four people and designing a product to sell. Once you have come up with your product idea and your pitch is approved by one of the facilitators, your group can take out money. Each person in the group can take out $20, meaning that the more people in your group, the more money you had available. You had to pay back your loans in one way or another with a $1 tax for each person.

When we first began this project, my partner and I struggled to produce business ideas we believed could succeed. After going back and forth, we decided to go with hacky sacks. We went with hacky sacks because my partner sold them at the Christmas market and did really well. We had an extra person join our group which meant we had more money to take out. That widened our product range as we were able to produce ideas that we wouldn’t have been able to before.

ASC capabilities

I had to constantly use multiple capabilities in the development stage of my product. The ones I had to use the most are resilience and Collaborative. I had to be resilient when we were coming up with a product idea, to keep pushing on and on until we could think of one. I had to have good collaboration skills because I needed to be able to talk with my fellow group members. That was vital because if everyone was communicating, we would be working as efficiently as possible.

I faced countless obstacles along the way. Our first problem was coming up with a product idea. We were able to conquer that problem after a few periods of intense brainstorming and help from teachers. Our next problem was the creation of our product. We had to cut out almost 200 hacky sack templates, then sew them together which took up a large chunk of time. We were able to complete it in time by all meeting up one weekend and working hard. Our last problem before the showcase was the packaging. We went back and forth between ideas but decided on cellophane. I bought the packaging a day before the market and only had a limited amount of time to assemble the juggler’s pack.

Overall, the $20 boss project was very fun and I enjoyed it a lot. I’m looking forward to continuing my business next semester and can’t wait to face the challenges that come at me.
