In this term for media, we have been working on creating a short film, as an advert for a fake or real product.

Production Process

To start thinking of making an advert to needed to learn the basics and understand what a good advert was. For the first lesson, we analysed examples of good adverts. We also learned in the same lesson about different types of shots we may need to use in the advert, and how to effectively use them. The lesson after this, we needed to create a storyboard so we knew what kind of advert and shots to record. We had to first get this approved by Mr Hamilton, and from there we spent a few weeks getting to know how to use the DSLR camera and record our shots. After this, we edited it, and it was finished.

How did we come up with our idea?

As stated, we needed to create a storyboard for ideas. For some reason, we decided we would make something to do with Shrek. We thought we could do a whole merch store, but we decided to make Shrek water. We had multiple types of ideas for this kind of product. We first thought we could make a thirstrap out of it, but that was a failure. We decided we would make it a cinematic type of advert.

Three types of challenges that we faced

Thirst Trap

As part of our advert, we chose to make a thirst trap for our Shrek water. A thirst trap is basically an aesthetic advert for a product or thing and is to create attention. We tried filming one, but we didn’t have the right skills and creativity for a good thirst trap.

Costumes

Another thing that our media group forgot to do for the advert was to bring costumes. We tried our best to use the costumes that the media room already had, which was fine for Trent but wasn’t as successful for Nishaan and me. For one of our scenes, we just decided to invert our ASC jacket, which didn’t look the worst and looked quite goofy.

Editing with Rush

Our group wasn’t the best at using rush as editing software, so we weren’t able to do some easy things like green screen, and putting colour in a particular area. Apart from this problem, the actual advert didn’t seem that bad.

What would we change to make it better?

Next time we make an advert, our team should’ve probably been more organised for our costumes. We should’ve also shot our scenes quicker, so we had more time to spend editing and refining the advertisement. Apart from this minor changes, I feel like it was a decent advert, and I enjoyed producing it.
