Skills I have learned

This year I learned a lot of stuff, one of which is media. I decided to create a video using my media skills to create a day in a life of a year 7. I hope you enjoy it!

Project Utopia 2022

School Trip

Year 7 traveled to Fremantle Port to get a better understanding of the surroundings. While we were there we had to fill out a small booklet that contained information that will benefit us later in the project. We split up into groups and traveled to different places in the Port. First, we arrived at the Maratine Museum but it was a shame that we couldn’t enter it. But we still got to look at some cool things like a massive submarine and the limestone wall. Overall I enjoyed it but I think it was kind of rushed and we should’ve had a bit more time there. This experience gave us a lot of information that we have used in our projects.

The Giver

Project Utopia is about creating an amazing world that no one would want to leave. Term 2, the whole of year 7 was introduced to The Giver, made by Lois Lowry. The Giver led up to the main project which was Project Utopia. The Giver is about a boy named Jonas, in his mind, he thinks the community is perfect whilst in reality, the community is corrupted. The Giver made me understand that no world is perfect and that it is better to know the truth than make everyone believe a lie.

Introduction to the Project

In the middle of term 2, we were properly introduced to the project utopia. Two experts came in to explain to us our project. They explained that they wanted us to give them ideas for Fremantle. Mr. Green then explained more about it. Project Utopia is to make an amazing place that people will love. Fremantle port was moving away which means people are deciding what to put there. All saints and the Fremantle port redesign team gave us an amazing opportunity, they let us create and pitch ideas to them. At first, this made me and Arya excited to do this project. We were thinking of imagining 10-20 years later us viewing the new Fremantle port and seeing our ideas. After the experts said we were going to help redesign Fremantle, I’m sure everyone was intrigued.

Vision Board

After we were introduced to the project our first goal was to create a poster of all our ideas A.K.A a Vision Board. Basically, it is a big collage of mostly pictures and words that show our vision for the project. Our ideas had to represent some of the livability factors and they had to be either sustainable or liveable or even both. My group members were Shola and Milana, whilst we were creating the vision board we got some hiccups. For instance, Milana had to go quarantine and so we only had 2 members and that we were on a time crunch and we started rushing it. Overall I think my group did quite well.

Grandparents Day

After we made our vision board we had to present them to our grandparents. Most of my peers brought in their grandparents to see their work. My grandma came in to see what I have been doing at school, she couldn’t wait to see my work since I talked about it all the time with her. My Grandma took photos and asked questions about our ideas and I really think she enjoyed coming to look at the vision board. After that, I said my goodbyes to her and she was very impressed with not just my work but everyone’s, she took some pictures of the school and of my group’s vision board, and then she left.

Class model

We had to make an individual plot of land on the class model, on my plot of land had museums, heritage walls, and a shopping center. We made these using Minecraft and physical objects like plastic trees that weren’t too scale and foam boards that were used to make buildings. This took us around a 5 weeks, using the info we collected in class we used that to place our buildings.

Presentation

On the day of the presentation we were feeling good, multiple parents came in and saw our pitch and they asked multiple questions. It felt amazing that the adults and teachers enjoyed and got involved by asking questions about our answers and our own questions. On that day I had my sister’s Athletics carnival so I left early for that but I didn’t miss the presentation which was good.

Christmas markets

My group struggled initially; we had 3 days left until the presentation and had no ideas. During that time I was creating a comic named N.A.R.D.F. It was about a group of kids who have special abilities and powers. I offered my group to use my comic book as the product and surprisingly they all said yes.

During the presentation, we were accepted by Mr. Scotti. We were thrilled, we thought we were going to be rejected but luck was going our way. After that, we started making prototypes. My group decided that we should make a N.A.R.D.F 2. That comic took me 18 hours to make so it did take up a lot of my time. A week after and we started printing N.A.R.D.F 2, during that time we realized that it was going to be really hard to print N.A.R.D.F 1 since it was hand drawn. We were running the clock, I finished the comic but we had to print the night before the market, I was getting stressed since my teammates ditched me and I had to print it all by myself. Luckily I had a little help from my parents, they made it happen.

On the day of the market, I walked into school proud that I have accomplished my mission. I had my comics in my hand and nobody could bring me down. I walked into class with the comics in my hand, Sibs had a container that had stickers and could hold our comics, and deep brought a picture frame.

At lunch, we had our stand up and we felt confident, nothing could stop us. We were placed in an amazing spot but the more we headed into lunch the more we thought it wasn’t very good. During lunch we had a few people walk up but none of them bought it, they either said it is cool and they didn’t have money or they would just say something negative like “we are just paying for the paper”. That brought us down. After we only had 2 people buy our comics which wasn’t boosting our confidence at all. At one moment there were only 5 minutes left and we only made $6. At that point, we weren’t feeling very good, we had 5 minutes left and $6 in total. A few minutes later and the Market ended, we had to pack up and go inside our classes. Inside some people came and bought it which brought our total to $15 which wasn’t enough for our goal.

This experience was quite good since it taught us economic abilities and how to manage money and how to run a business which was quite fun. This experience made me make a business name C.O.M.I.C which is made up of Sam ho and me. The skills we learnt in Humanities and English is being used in this company.

Media with Mr. Hamilton

In Term 1, I learned Media with Mr. Hamilton, It was a very fun experience, especially during filming. The skit we had to make was an ad for a product so my group chose Uber Eats. I learned camera angles and how to remember my lines, I also found out what a storyboard was. Having a whole term to create an ad isn’t much, we only got 2 hours a week. At the end of Media we showed our ads to the class, everyone enjoyed my groups since it was very entertaining, it also had a tiger plushy in the ending. Overall, I loved learning about Media, It was very fun experiencing it with my friends.

Connected Learning with Mr. Port

I have been working with Mr. Port for a few weeks now, he has taught me the skills and techniques for apps and websites. One of the skills that I enjoyed learning about was how to use a camera and edit clips. My group created a high-action 1-minute video about a thief and a hero. I learned how to use camera angles and to make a very smooth transition between 2 different videos.

Life of Gianni”

Science Poster

I did a science project regarding dams to help me understand dams and their use. To demonstrate my understanding of dams I created a poster.

To create this poster, we had 2 weeks to research and create this poster, there were different options o research, there was polluted water and more.

InnovatEd

This term, our teachers introduced us to a new project named, The Future of Fremantle. This project was to brainstorm ideas to replace Fremantle port since it is moving to Cockburn. We had 1 term to create ideas that will be sustainable and liveable for everyone who will live or stay there. We placed our ideas on vision boards which we later presented to our grandparents in week 8. All of year 7 explained to their grandparents what their ideas were to replace Fremantle and how they will have something for everyone.

This is one of my good pieces of work since I put a lot of work into it. But it wasn’t just me who did the work, Shola put a lot of work into this as well, (Shola is one of my group members). My group had another member but she was absent during the creation of the vision board. Shola and I were on a time crunch when we were creating this, this is because there wasn’t much time left and we were making last-minute changes. During this experience I have learnt the livability goals
