Values

Why are some of these my values?
Confidence:
Confidence is one of my largest values, it is very important to me when interacting with other people, I am normally a shy quiet person. Having the confidence to do some things will help me with things like performing since I play several instruments and find it difficult to have social interactions. Despite confidence being one of the values I need to work on the most (a weakness), it is one that is very important to me, something that I want to work on in order to help me with my life.
Excellence:
My family has very high standards for me in school. Excellence is important as I also find it hard on me if I achieve a “bad” result. To me, excellence is something that I want to achieve and strive for in my school life as well as in other aspects outside like extracurricular activities. I especially care for the MESH subjects, math, science, English and HASS. My life is affected by this value because I try very hard to achieve this and do better. However, a downside to having this value is a lot of stress and also being very strict with myself.
Family:
My value of family is connected, hand-in-hand with my value of excellence. I share the same desire as my family for me to do well. Apart from this, I also care very deeply for my family and enjoy spending time. My interactions with my family are affected because I try to be respectful and helpful.
Role Models
GOOD ROLE MODELS (MALALA YOUSAFZAI)
https://malala.org/malalas-story
What behaviours does this person demonstrate that show they are a healthy role model?
She spoke publicly on behalf of women’s rights under the control of the Taliban. This however made her a target. She was shot by a gunman on her bus. She is a Nobel Peace Prize receiver and is a Pakistani activist. The fact that she was able to stand up to and survive the oppressive Taliban shows her determination for all children to have the right to an education.
What do they look like? Are they healthy? How do you know?
Malala is relatively young at age 24. She is seems happy but is adamant that all children get an education. She was not well when she was shot in the head but she has recovered since then. Many pictures depict her smiling and confident, signs that she is a healthy person.
What message does this person promote? Why is it inspiring and healthy?
Malala Yousafzai has made speeches about the Taliban taking away her education. Her first speech – “How Dare the Taliban Take Away My Basic Right to Education?” this speech was made public throughout Pakistan. The message that she is sending is that everyone has the right to an education. I think this is inspiring because of her story and how, despite living under the oppressive Taliban, she is able to stand up and protest.
Why should young people look up to this person as a role model?
From Malala’s actions there are several takeaways. The first is confidence, Malala is known for her activism and fight for women’s right to education in Pakistan. While living under the Taliban’s rules she still had the bravery to make a stand. The second takeaway is her will to have an education. In my opinion, willingness to learn and be educated is a very important thing for young people. It is a good thing to live up to.
Thinking back to your House of Values activity, what values does this person demonstrate?
Malala has demonstrated confidence, excellence and very much so, compassion.
Her confidence is demonstrated through her fight against the Taliban. She was an activist against the Taliban of which has killed many thousands of individuals.
Her excellence is demonstrated through her achievements. Graduation from Oxford, being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and has become known worldwide.
Compassion is shown in her will to fight for women’s rights to education. She has said that everyday, she fights to make sure that all girls can get 12 years of education.
BAD ROLE MODELS (KIM JONG UN)
What behaviours does this person demonstrate that show they are an unhealthy role model?
Kim Jong Un has demonstrated unhealthy and ruthless use of power as Supreme Leader. As he went into power, there was a sharp increase in nuclear weapons. He executed his uncle in December 2013. He said that he had “removed the scum”. Killing one of his family members is a sign that he is definitely not a healthy role model.
What do they look like? Do they look unhealthy? How do you know?
Many images depict him frowning, not smiling. He seems very sinister. However, he seems to have lost weight. I see him as sinister potentially due to me knowing what actions he has done.
What message does this celebrity promote? Why is it unhealthy?
The message that Kim Jong Un is promoting is abuse of power. He has an army of 1.2 million and a large amount of nuclear missiles. His actions and message are unhealthy because he is demonstrating a large amount of power and killed many people because of it. People with the wrong idea about his message could potentially assume that it is not at all a bad thing.
Do you think that young people should look up to this person as a role model? Why or why not?
Definitely not, his abusive nature and routine executions of those who disagree with him mean that he shouldn’t be some young people look up to. Children or people who pick up these habits from seeing him as a good role model could mean bad things. Just by looking at Kim Jong Un’s actions and what he is known for, we see that he isn’t someone anyone should loo up to.
Is everything that you here in the media true? Discuss.
Not everything on the media is true. There is a difference between good sources and bad sources. This means that some forms of information could be unrealistic or not true, however not all sources of information are like this. The truth from news and other forms of media can easily be bent and changed in order to maybe receive more views or pass on false information.
