Semester 1 LOCK Outdoor Education Reflection

During Semester 1 of Outdoor ED Lock, we completed activities like:

  • Swimming Test
  • Knot tying test
  • Rock climbing
  • Kayaking
  • Starting a campfire
  • Cooking on a campfire

During Term 1, we learnt new skills like knot tying, rock climbing ad kayaking. In Term 2, we learnt how to start a fire and cook food on the fire.

Dwellingup Camp

On May the 3rd, all three OutdoorED LOCK classes embarked on a day trip to Dwellingup, Nangamill. Some activities included kayaking, high ropes course and bush cooking using hotplates. I enjoyed this camp very much as it further developed my camping skills and knowledge. My cooking group consisted of Henry, Zoey and myself, and we cooked some delicious bacon and egg rolls.

Rock Climbing

During the single periods in Term 1, our LOCK class used the rock climbing wall in the ISC and practised climbing and safely belaying. We learned specific knots like the reef knot and alpine butterfly knot to correctly set up the rock climbing wall and ensure that no one would injure themselves.

Kayaking

During the double periods in Term 1, our LOCK class would go down to Shelly foreshore (Swan River) and use kayaks that the school had hired from PaddleWA. We would spend about an hour and a half on the water learning new skills like emergency stops and playing games like Canoe Polo. My favourite part of kayaking would be the Jetty Launches, this was where we would launch our kayak off the jetty and into the water below.

Bush Cooking

In Term 2, we started a new topic of bush cooking. In the very early stages, we learnt about fire safety and the multiple different ways you can set up a fire so it can be used for cooking. We also learned about the 5 different thickness levels of wood needed to keep a fire alight, and how long you need to leave the fire burning until it is hot enough to cook on. Currently, our group has only cooked two meals on the fire; bacon and eggs muffins and the Hawaiian pizzas, so we are still quite inexperienced.

This is a picture of one of the Hawaiian pizzas that our group cooked on the fire.

Values and Capabilities

During the entire OutdoorED subject I have used many of the ASC capabilities like organisation and leadership. A few capabilities I have developed further are self-awareness. An example of where I had to use organisation and leadership skills was when our group was choosing and preparing meals to cook on the fire. I helped assign essential items and ingredients for every person in our group to bring on the days we would be cooking. One example of when I was being self-aware was when we were cooking on the fire. We made sure to pick up any food scraps and dispose of them, we also made sure to burn out the fires that we used, so other cooking groups could use them after us.

Sustainability

A big part of our Lock class was the Leave No Trace principle. There are 7 main principles for the LNT; plan ahead, camp in durable spaces, dispose of waste properly, leave what you find, minimize campfire impacts, respect wildlife and be considerate of others. We have practised nearly all of these principles throughout the duration of our classes. It is very important to follow these guidelines so we can leave animals living in the environment unaffected by humans.
