Project Utopia was handed out to student’s last term. We were told that this project would be based around the redesign of Fremantle Port and to create a place where all people thrive. We were then placed into groups. The people in my group were Safeera, Paramie and Christian. I felt confident and creative during this project, and I am very proud of my result. During the project, I displayed good confidence and progress in my communication, collaboration, and organisational skills.
When we were first placed into our groups, we were first told to brainstorm what strategies a city needed to “thrive”. Using my collaboration skills to work well with my group we thought of many strategies like a sustainable water system, easy access transport and sustainable housing. We then thought of ideas to help with these strategies such as bike taxis, houses made of shipping containers and a water filtration system that only filtered when needed. All this was the planning stage. I learnt a lot of things from the project to do with sustainability and other things to do with the environment, but I also learnt lots of ways to organise my work and work well with others. For example, all our work was ordered by the section and who did what.
I used my communication skills to talk with my group about ways to include culture in our green apartments. For example, we decided to have the top floor as a live performance area where talented Fremantle artists could share their music and where people could come to sit down have a drink and relax after a long day of work or study. We used our collaboration skills to include everyone’s ideas into the space to make it as innovative and creative as possible. We also incorporated aboriginal culture. We did this by taking a well-known Aboriginal art piece (the rainbow serpent) and having it wrap around the building to be seen in full at a certain angle from the beach next to where the apartments were placed.
Throughout the whole project, I used my organisation skills to organise my work and place it in order. I did this so I could easily go back to work I’ve done before to help generate ideas and make sure we were including all our past ideas in our current piece of work and the final idea. I also used my collaboration skills to work well with my group, while also listening to others and watching them use their collaboration skills as well.
I conclusion I think that I used my collaboration, communication, and organisation skills to the best of my ability and showed that I did in all my work. I think that the skill I used the best was my collaboration skills because I used them the most efficiently during the project while I used the other skills slightly less but still used them efficiently as well.
