Outdoor Education: Capabilities Wheel

In Outdoor Education this semester we have covered three major topics, including snorkeling in the first term, and archery and orienteering in the second term. During snorkeling, we went off campus multiple times. We made three outings to Coogee beach, and even a day trip to Rottnest Island for our snorkeling block, and for orienteering we have been to Manning park twice. Doing these activities helped me grow in heaps of capabilities, especially collaboration, organization, and effective communication.

Collaboration- During Outdoor Education this semester, I believe that my collaboration skills have increased a lot. Most of this has come from orienteering, but snorkeling contributed a bit as well. While we were orienteering around the campus and Manning park, the people in our group had to collaborate effectively. We did this by splitting up our responsibilities based on our strengths and weaknesses, making sure everyone contributed.

Organization- Our focus for the first term we were snorkeling, and this helped me to be more organized. Whenever we went off campus, or were snorkeling down at the aquatic center, we had to bring all our gear, including skins, snorkel and mask, fins, towel and a change of clothes. To have all of these at school, we had to be organized and make sure we had all the necessary equipment, or we would not be able to participate.

Effective communication- While we were out orienteering, we had to be able to communicate with our group to locate where the control is and find the bets route. When we started I believe that I was not very good at this, but as the term progressed I feel like my communication skills have become a lot better. In addition, when we were snorkeling we had to communicate with our partners to make sure we knew what they are going to do and what they want to do, as well as ensuring they know what we want to do.
