Hi, I’m Emily, and at first when you meet me, I may seem a little shy but as I become more comfortable, I will be a lot more outgoing. I’m a very hard worker who’s engaged in everything that I do. Some of my passions include tennis, swimming, cycling, art, the environment and travelling. Some of my qualities include creativity and leadership.
To me, leadership means being a leader by example, to help and serve people. I’ve applied for many leadership positions including some where I was unsuccessful such as house captain in Junior school and house council in year 8. Even though I only just missed out on getting those positions and I don’t have the badge, to me, that isn’t an excuse not to demonstrate leadership capabilities and I still strive to be the best me possible. Through my ongoing perseverance I was then successful for the house council in yr 10 where we help to organise events and lead groups. I have been a part of most of the student led college tours at school where we show a group of prospective parents and students around the school telling them about our experience at the college.
Recently I have been trying to get further outside my comfort zone and been trying new things by signing myself up for lots of service-learning opportunities including literacy mentors where I help younger students in the Junior school improve their reading and help them to enjoy it more. However, the opportunity that I have found the most beneficial is Nulsen Youth Patrons where we work with Nulsen disability services to hold fundraisers to raise money for the company that go towards further supporting the residents, giving them more opportunities and making the houses they’re staying at feel more like home. Also we go on house visits to see the residents where we do activities with them depending on their likes, for example with some we did painting and put their handprints on a canvas whilst with others we played basketball, jenga or even just talk with them and listen to their life which helps to make many of them very happy. Most importantly though we can develop many of our skills especially our communication as with some who are non-verbal, we have to find alternative ways to communicate with them and much more where we learn so much that teaches us more about the world.
Outside of school I tend to spend a lot of time with family, mainly with my dog and go out for walk altogether or go out to explore new places. In the holidays we usually go camping and spend time connecting with nature. If at home I meet up with friends to play tennis, go shopping or play games at our houses and just catch up. If it weren’t for the support of my family and friends I would never be where I am today.
For many years I have been captain of my tennis team and as part of being captain you must support and encourage both older and younger teammates, be organised and create rosters for who’s going to play each week. As part of a team with different abilities, we have experienced highs and lows and learnt that through mutual support and encouragement, we can enjoy the contest and achieve great results.
Some of my goals for the future include becoming more confident and to make the most of every single opportunity even if it might not sound as appealing as you can learn a lot from it but most importantly you will never know whether you like something until you try it.
