“Innovation is a mixture of the old and the new with a dash of suprise”

Overview Introduction

Project Utopia is about innovating a new community for Fremantle port. Since the original job of Fremantle port is moving to Kwinana, there will be empty land left to use. It was our job to create ideas for what we thought Fremantle port should become. By going through an extensive process, of thinking, brainstorming, writing reports, and making visuals. We finally presented to professionals and pitched our ideas.

All Saints’ Capabilities and Global goals

All Saints’ capabilities and global goals were significant things to consider while participating in this project. We used the All Siants’ Capabilities to guide us through the different innovation processes, we used every one of these categories on the Capability wheel to make sure we made something to the best of our ability. Every group had picked a number of global goals that they wanted to persist with, by doing this we all had clear ideas of what we were trying to achieve within the creation of the evolving Fremantle port.

The Giver

This project was based on a couple of things, but an idea came from the book The Giver. In class, we read the book The Giver, which was about a world made to be perfect, a utopia. But behind the scenes of this perfect world should have been, the world was crumbling, and perfection was getting harder to maintain. As one person was picked to receive all the darkness of the world, captured in memory. All the bad things people had done, without feeling or emotion, kept it from their citizens. We used this story as an example and used it to guide our thinking about what we could create. Making sure we didn’t have a corrupt unfair world, like in the story.

Excursion

To get a better understanding of Fremantle and the area we were dealing with, we went on an excursion to Fremantle port where we examined the place and land that we were going to build the future upon. We went on a bus ride along the roads of the port and recorded what we saw and our visions at the time. We also looked into the history of Fremantle and answered some questions regarding restoring and keeping history. Then we went to the maritime museum where we learnt even more about the port and how it came to be the place it is today.

Vision Board

After gathering a lot of information, we made vision boards to show to our grandparents on grandparents’ day. The board contained all the basic fundamental information that we wanted to put in Fremantle port. Capturing our main ideas and plans by referring to the global goals. Within my group, we mainly focused on the heritage and sustainability of Fremantle, so within of vision board, we captured our ideas to make Fremantle a better place. Using sustainable markets out of old shipping containers, putting solar panels on every roof and building in the area, and looking at using limited space by making VR museums, etc.

Report

In HASS we had to create a report explaining our main ideas and visions for the port while including extra detail and maintaining a healthy group status. In my group, we focus on the community aspect and how we can bring diversity together, we decided this would be best if we created a central marketplace. Including heritage walks, supporting local businesses, and promoting sustainability. All from original work and not copyrighting anyone else’s ideas/ work.

Visual map

Our visual map was yet another layer for our Fremantle journey. We decided t bring our ideas to life by creating something visual, so we could gather a better understanding of scale and placement. Each group had an allocated section of Fremantle to design. Each group had to work together to make sure the map would fit together, making sure roads were in the right places, and if something overlapped into the next section, that team would know and knowledge it. We put our final ideas onto the map and used creative materials to make our visions come to life. After everyone had finished their section, we put the map together. We could finally see all our ideas come together.

Showcase

The last part of this project was to showcase our maps and any other extra information to parents and special guests. These special guests had experience in different fields, so they knew what they were looking for, for the future of Fremantle port. This was also a time to show off all the work we had accomplished throughout the Future of Fremantle project period. Coming to great outcomes, your ideas were heard and our work paid off.
