This semester we completed the printmaking course. I learned a variety of different printmaking techniques and extended my creative thinking. To create the designs for my prints I went on Pinterest and searched for the aesthetic or idea I wanted to achieve. The types of prints we created were potato print, frottage, mono print, etching, and lino. The potato print was the first print we tested, for this, we used cookie cutters to carve the shape out and then pressed the design into paint then onto paper. The mono print needed to be done quickly, we rolled black paint onto a plastic sheet, then used a Q-tip to create your desired design by removing the layer of paint, and finally, you pressed your sheet of paper on top of your design. For etching, you first print out the design you want to replicate and then you tape it behind your etching plastic. Using an etching tool you engrave and trace over the design and make sure you use a hard pressure. Next, you would go over to the printing station, put a blob of paint onto the etching, and scrape the paint to fill the engraving. Take the etching to the press and roll it over some damp paper. Lino printing was a fun process, you would choose your design and draw it into the lino using carbon paper. Use a sharpie to mark out which parts you were caving out. Then carve into the lino using the lino tools making sure you have sharp and clean lines. Finally, you ink up the lino and use the press you transfer the design onto paper. Visually, my favorite print design was the etching because I really liked the engraved and ashy look it created.

What worked?

  • Picking out designs that fit the print
  • Time management
  • Learning lots of new techniques
  • Applying the correct pressure during the lino and etching process
  • Defined and clean lines on lino

What problems did you face?

  • Mono print dried out before I printed
  • Not applying enough pressure the first time I etched
  • Not rolling over my while design in lino
  • Uneven ink layer in monoprint

What I learned

I learned the beauty in each of these prints and how they are unique. I was able to show my creativity and skills through each artwork along with a range of abilities. I had to use a lot of patience and adapt to any challenges that arose. I had to stay organised and manage my time well to meet deadlines. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and am very happy with the art I was able to produce
