In year 8 in visual arts, we are making lego brutalist sculptures made from concrete. Brutalists buildings are large and heavy looking building usually make from concrete. For this project we had to research brutalist building (to get ideas for our sculptures), make a sculpture out of lego, make a mold to pour the pinkysil into, and fill up the pinkysil mold with concrete and then add it to the lego concrete city. The first thing we did was make our sculptures, I made around five different designs that I liked and then mixed them together to create my final sculpture. Then we had to make a box out of board and wood, this was one of the most difficult parts of the project because we had to hot glue the walls and floor with hot glue (which took a long time to dry) and we had to make sure no water leaked out of the box, this meant we had to add more and more hot glue to stop the water from leaking out. Then we poured the pinkysil into the box and waited until it was dry. Then we took the lego out of the mold and made sure our molds were good to pour concrete into, after we had poured the concrete into the mold, we had to wait a long time for it to dry. But when I dried, we took it out of the mold and added it to the rest of my years lego sculptures to create a lego concrete city.
I developed my design by doing multiple prototypes and doing lots of different styles to see which one I liked best. Once I had chosen the designs I liked the most, I mixed them together and took my favorite parts from each design and put them together. Then I made my lego build and I really liked the way it looked and how it turned out.
What worked in this project was how I was able to change/ adapt my Lego build to fit the guidelines and have exactly what I wanted. I built several different Lego builds so I could see what style I liked and what I wanted to have my final product look like. In the end I had built seven different designs and I had combined my favorite designs and made my final Lego build.
What did not work for me in this project was when I was pouring the pinkysil into the box I had built and over my lego build, my build broke in half in the middle and the top floated to the top and the bottom half stayed stuck to the board. This meant when I opened the mold I had made, my build was in two pieces and was very difficult. I overcame this problem by taking the Top layer of lego out and cutting a small lego sized hole where I wanted the two sections to connect and then pulled the rest of the lego out. This meant that when I poured the concrete into my mold the lego would be one piece. The hole in the middle of my mold was not a perfect cut and I felt it looked messy. It ended up not looking how I wanted it too because it wasn’t clean cut, but the lego build did look unique and brutalist, which I liked in the end.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this project because I got to be creative and my sculpture did not have to look like everyone else’s, I also really enjoyed the freedom we got to work on our project because we could do our own thing and work well without having to follow a structure. This project has many steps to complete but ultimately it was a fun project and I really enjoyed it.
