Connected 7 Art Exhibition 2021/2022

For the last three years I participated in the Connected 7 art exhibition, ASC’s Fundraising Exhibition for Nulsen Disability Services. Through this process we were given a theme in which we had to create an art work.  Following  this theme making it  our own, I loved  creating and experimenting with art and different mediums.  This was an amazing opportunity to let my creative juices flow for a good cause. Last year I made a  paper flower with a moth in the middle symbolising a little fleck of life. This year (2022) the theme of the exhibition was full circle I decided to create a 3-D reef structure  reflecting global warming,  how the living reef is becoming a plastic reef with pollution. This was an amazing opportunity to learn about this issue as well as to raise awareness. The last two years I had the honor of receiving the first prize for year 10/11 artist which was an amazing honor. I love to create in my limited time and really enjoy being part of this experience each year.

Mentoring

Over the course of 2021, I was given the opportunity to mentor a year 6 student with dyslexia. Rahani and I met weekly in tutor group over the course of two years, each week discussing how she was going and getting to know each other. I gave her advice on school and coping with dyslexia sharing personal experiences and trying to create a connection and make her not feel alone. this was an amazing opportunity which I hope she benefitted from too. It was amazing to be able to give back and try and help her as I knew that the support was something I would have loved to have to go through school. This opportunity taught me about mentoring and communicating and is an opportunity I am very grateful to have been given, to continue helping students with dyslexia, struggling through school.

Benefit Concert

Each year my dance studio holds a week of small dance concerts at our studio during the July holidays in order to give our students an opportunity to show our progress. I performed in these concerts nightly both in groups and solos and attended a class each day prior to the show due to teachers being unable to attend due to covid. I took on many administration roles trying to help where I could, this included making food and helping with the kiosk before and after shows looking after students in the dressing room and looking after the door entry to the stage as well as running the student choreography and looking after my twinkle toes that I teach. This was an amazing opportunity to take part in as well as help with the concert with the community and work with younger students and help out my dance school.

DanceXchange

My job at DanceXchange has given me an amazing opportunity to build my negotiation, flexibility, accountability and leadership skills. I have been working at danceXchange since year 7, performing tasks like serving customers which includes designing and putting together costumes and accessories, restocking shelves and organizing our stock. Recently in 2021 I was promoted to Junior Manager in which my role was to lead, train and support the staff as well as opening and closing and running the store when the owner was away. This recent promotion and this job has taught me so much about design and costuming as well as many real life lesson and skills about working in the real world, I am so greatfull to work in this job as it has taught me about hard work.

Arts council

I have had the amazing opportunity to work alongside and be apart of the schools Arts Council since year 8.  I love and enjoy taking part in all the arts and this has been an amzing opportunity to give back to what I love and ASC and try to spark the love of arts within the community. Whilst being part of the Arts Council, I have attended many meetings to give my opinions and ideas about how to raise awareness about the arts and its activities. I have taken part in organizing many activities such as the flash mob, co curricular fair and speaking in Chapel, making flyers and contributing to the schools hot house Instagram  raising awareness about the many activities and performances ASC offers..

Peer support

I was lucky enough to be chosen to be a ‘Peer Support’ leader for 2022. This journey first started

With one personal development week which began with us working along side our heads of houses and our house mates to take part in a series of exercises showing and developing our leadership and teamwork skills.  We then submitted an aplication with a self lead activity to the rest of the group, after we had been accepted we split into our smaller groups and began planning for the year following a series of prompts to base each session on.  We began meeting with the year 8’s every Thursday morning in tutor group.  We had to lead and take part in activities working to creat a connection between year 8’s and us working to send the message of each activity. This was an amazing opportunity to work with and mentor the younger students as well as to make connections and work on my leadership, team work and communication skills.

Assistant Dance Teacher

From the beginning of year seven I have worked as an ‘Assistant Dance Teacher’ at my dance studio Dance Venture along side the dance teacher, working with children aged 4-6.  Whilst teaching, I demonstrate steps and help with choreography and lead a warm up.  I often have to deal with separation anxiety with such a young age group making sure all the students feel included and enjoy their time learning ballet.  Helping out  by dancing along side the student’s, gives them confidence in class and in our concerts  helping them not to get stage fright. I help with costuming and looking after my students in the dressing room. I love teaching and find it is an amazing opportunity to help ,inspire and nurture the next generation of dancers.

dyslexia campaign MEDIA COVERAGE

Year 8 student Jade Wheeler, who was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of eight, recently began campaigning for improved teacher training in dyslexia education.

After advocating passionately to politicians and university vice-chancellors for the past several months, Jade has won the support of Education Minister Sue Ellery MLC who is helping promote her campaign to the Federal Minister for Education and WA universities.

Jade has previously spoken with Hon Dr Mike Nahan MLA (Member for Riverton/Shadow Minister for Planning; Asian Engagement) and was invited by UWA Vice Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater to meet with herself and a member of her team to further discuss the cause.

Jade’s campaigning began in Year 3 and, with the support of her parents and the College, has gained increased traction and attention over the past six years.

Jade has recently attracted media coverage in the West Australian Newspaper and on ABC Radio.

Service partner problems

As part of the innovate ED

program at All Saints, I was able to work for an organization to help solve their problem. I chose RAAFA. RAAFA is located just down the road of our school, and we were provided with the opportunity to help their residents by designing a food transportation service.

Our challenge was to produce a prototype of a food transport system to help there resident when they are ill and can’t make it to the areas where food is provided so that they don’t miss out. I was really excited to hear about this as I am passionate about helping people and I want to make a difference and help people. I also have some good family friends that like at RAAFA and I want them to be comfortable and fed and happy.

First of all We went threw the planning faze thinking of multiple ideas to solve this problem before choosing that best few ideas to combine to produce a prototype then it was time to research we researched all the different components of our food cat to find out what products are the least expensive and what could be locally sourced. Then finally we came up with a final prototype and presented a pitch to a member of RAAFA.

Some of the school’s values I have displayed are empathy I have empathized with the people of RAAFA and what they are going threw and trying to help them. Courage I got up the confidence to speak in front of our class and to pick in front of a person from RAAFA and finally respect I respected all my group members and their ideas.
