Project Utopia

What is “Project Utopia”

Project utopia is a HASS project that all of the year seven cohort was given. The fremantle port is being moved to kwinana so, my group and I were given the chance to redesign the big empty space where the port was. Our objective was to make it as livable as possible.

Planning stage

The group I was put in was with Nithin, Caleb and enoch. The start of this project was definitely the start because I found it challenging to come up with new innovative ideas that have never been done before. Our main idea was the pier which was originally just going to be a plain old pier.

The Pier

The pier was a big struggle because we replanned it 3 times. Originally it was going to be a ripoff of the santa monica pier in america but then an expert told us it was not innovative enough. So we decided to make it stop erosion by having rocks under the pier so the waves wouldn’t sweep away any more sand. We thought we were finished with the pier until the second expert which has dealt with erosion before. He informed us that once the waves hit the pier it would ricochet and cause erosion elsewhere in fremantle. So my group and I decided to put the tip of the pier in a T shape so instead of the waves bouncing off the waves will get trapped in the corner and stop.

Challenges

My main challenge was definitely doing the physical presentation because I have never really done that before. We also spent way to much time on the digital presentation so we didn’t have much time on the physical. Another challenge was at the very start trying to come up with original innovative ideas for our space.

Overall

Overall the project utopia was a great experience i’d love to do again. I was very lucky because I was put in a group with all my friends which made the project more exciting. The hardest part for me was definitely the public speaking but I pulled through and I think we did well.
