Our ambitious project centers on designing a seismic-resistant building, prioritizing swift assembly, specific dimensions, and affordability. Guided by Neil and Eden, our team aims to construct a model meeting success criterion within a $60 budget for each prototype. Challenges include achieving a minimum height of 60 cm, a maximum base of 30 cm x 30 cm, a 5 cm x 5 cm flat top platform, and stability during a simulated 10-second earthquake. Mine and Eden’s organizational working created a collaborative environment for innovative solutions within this cost-effective framework.
My group and I were helped by the engineering process and its various phases as we gained an insight and investigated different concepts and structures, obtaining information on how to create our structure. We started by identifying the project’s criteria and then looked at several approaches for building an earthquake-resistant construction. We were able to build and test the design, but it failed, therefore we had to return to the drawing stage to ensure that this new design did not fail. We detected and identified the issue in the first design and were able to work around it to significantly simplify and stabilize our second prototype. We’d then put our new idea to the test and be much more successful. We then examined, shared, and improved our design with other groups to see how their ideas varied. If we had to change anything about the process, we would very certainly add another development and test phase before the evaluation. We were successful in doing so, which increased the success of our second prototype since we were able to identify and fix the flaws and obstacles.
In the group, we had team members Neil and Eden. I felt as if the role I had was more of the cleaning and maintaining the design making sure nothing is broken and everything is stable is fixed. On the other hand, Edens role was pivotal in making sure that we had made the design to the best of our abilities making the major decisions in the designs. We both helped make a draft of our design and both worked off each other rebounding ideas. We worked hard and communicated efficiently, making sure we both knew what to do. We both contributed successfully and made two good designs that succeeded in the testing stage.
