Media Reflection

This term in media, we have been working on an advertisement. This was an advertisement for a random product that we had made. We worked on this the whole term, and learnt many techniques to make the best possible advertisement.

The beginning

Ideating

The first thing that we had to do was think up of our product and to get a rough idea of our advertisement. We needed to make a storyboard, and then we needed to make a script, and more. After planning, we also started learning about different ways to film, and how to make a very good advertisement. Then, it was time to start making our advertisement. Our product was Shrek Bathwater. The main reason we did this is because we are devoted Shrek lovers, and we thought that it would be good to pass down the worshipping of Shrek to others.

The making…

Making our Advertisement

Our second last step was making the actual advertisement. We had to get all of the resources and began to film. We already knew what we were going to film, so we just needed to film it. Trent was our main actor, so he had to do most of the lines and was on the screen for the most time. We filmed around the school, some in the showers and some in the lockers. We got our costumes from the hanger, and we were done. At the end, we decided to make a thirst trap which was not very successful. However, we still put it in our video and tried to make it look not half bad.

Editing

The last step in our media process was editing. We decided to do it on Adobe Rush, as it was simple to use and it made a nice product. We added our audio by using an youtube to mp3 converter, and then we got all of our clips and put them together in order that we wanted to play them. Lastly, we refined the rough edges, added text, and then we were done. Below, you can see our finished media video.

3 Things That Went Wrong

There were many problems when making our media video, specifically with filming and costumes. Below, you can see the specific snags we hit.

Costumes

Unfortunately, our entire group forgot to bring costumes to our Media class, because we are failures. So, we had to improvise and get some costumes off the hangers. We had to try and find a costume that refleted the character well, which we did well for Trent, but were unsuccessful with Aditya and I. One time, we just inverted the school jacket and wore it so that you couldn’t see the logo.

Thirst Trap

One other problem that we experienced was the thirst trap. We tried to make a thirst trap with only 10 minutes left of the lesson, but it was impossible. So, what we did was we edited the thirst traps a lot so that it was less likely to notice how bad the thirst trap actually was.

Editing Green Screen

Unfortunately, in the end, we had a bit of trouble editing the green screen to add an image in the back. So, when we couldn’t figure out how to do it, we just decided to leave it green because Shrek is green.

What will we do differently next time?

The main thing that we will do differently next time is use better time management. We noticed that we had very poor time management, and that resulted in us only having very limited time for some of our other shots, whereas we spent lots of time on some shots (i.e., the shower shot). Next time, we will try to evenly divide it, or perhaps spend more time on the trickier, more important shots, than the ones that don’t really matter. We had very little time for editing and other stuff, so we had to do it at home. Our thirst trap came our quite poorly, but in the end we made it work. Another thing we would do differently is perhaps make more people in our group have to act, or evenly divide the acting roles amongst our group, especially when we are each equally bad at acting.
