Project Utopia Year 7

THE FUTURE OF FREMANTLE

How did this project start?

The year 7 cohort of 2022 was given the opportunity to redesign the Fremantle port into a destination which will be liveable for everyone, but how exactly did this all start? At the start of Term 2, All Saints’ College invited experts who were planning the redevelopment of the port in Fremantle to explain to us about why and how the Fremantle Port was going to be redeveloped. The current port was going to be moved to Kwinana, therefore creating a lot of empty land which had potential to be used for something else.

Visiting the site:

In Term 2 the Year 7 cohort also had the chance to visit the Fremantle port to gain a sense of its colossal size and the history and culture involved with the place. This was very important for our future planning of this space because we needed to know the scale of the port to plan out the size of buildings and other things. This was also very important for coming up with ideas that connect with the culture and history of Fremantle.

Vision Board:

The next part of this project was to come up with ideas that suits the culture of Fremantle. Along with my team (Enoch Wang, Barry Jelinek, Riyani Outschoorn), we came up with and found many innovative and brilliant ideas that would be used for our plan, but how did we present these ideas? This is where the vision board comes in. We were given two pieces of foam that was cut out in rectangular pieces to present our ideas. We then also had the chance to present them at Grandparent’s day to also gain feedback and any other ideas that we could add.

Planning on a map:

For this part we were given new groups to work with. In this stage, we had to plan where different places would be. After this stage, we got one part of the map to work with and we could only plan on that part. After planning we had to use our art skills to put together small buildings made of foam, roads and other things onto a physical copy of our part of the map. This did not turn out too well but you could still clearly identify where different buildings, parks etc are.

This was a basic plan of our part of the map

Cospaces model:

This was a digital part of our plan for the Future of Fremantle. This was basically a 3d model but online and clearly showed all our parts for our piece of the port.

The Final Stage:

Our final stage was to present our pieces and our presentation to parents and experts that would come in. I feel like we did pretty well in this stage and we all presented our parts perfectly explaining every detail. We also received some feedback and questions which we decided to use in following speeches to improve our ideas.

Conclusion:

Overall, I felt that this was a great opportunity for our Year 7 cohort. We learnt many skills throughout this project especially from the capabilities wheel.

Through this project, I improved my problem-solving, Resilience, Effective Communication, and organization capabilities.
