Project X- Illuminate Festival

Process

This semester we got the challenge to choreograph our end-of-transition dance/ Illuminate festival. This was a fun experience and I learned new things. The theme was puppets/dolls and we had to make the movement as a group and individually.

This semester we were told to choreograph our own movements for the toy part and the tutting. We had 13 classes to make this but we had to miss out on so around 10 classes to choreograph all of the dance. When I did dance I was excited, I had kereen but I wasn’t close with everyone. Now I am very close and Eden and we are good friends. I did really like dance before but I really enjoy it now and I have improved in my skills. For the tutting, every one put in their ideas and we changed things and agreed as a team. By doing this people felt included and kept on putting ideas in. The day we were performing we got with the other class and put it all together. I was a little close to the people around me but we moved a little so we had room to do our movements. Eden was behind me on the ground being slime while I was Darth Vader, we didn’t know that we would be so close to the tree so Eden was moving on the floor in the wood chips but I was lucky enough to just miss it. After we got the dance together I really felt more confident because I didn’t know where the other class was going to be. When we did the puppet choreography we had to make sure that our moves were rigid and fast, we also had to stay still so the effect was more efficient. When we were getting ready to perform we had to make sure that we were really still like puppets/dolls, ms Cod wanted us to go up in little groups like two so it was discrete.

Reflection On Performance

In the performance, I kept doll-like. I didn’t get that scared or nervous performing but I didn’t expect so many people to watch. I go to the places that I needed to be at the right times. I didn’t really smile because I wasn’t sure if I was meant to plus the sun was in my face so I was squinting. My timing was good at the start throughout but I did lose balance while the group tutting because I had to turn backward on one hand. The group performed really well due to the circumstances like people being away in the group meaning we have to go through it again the next lesson. We had many disruptions like carnivals and covid. When we performed in the dance studio I was less distracted but when we went outside I would see people I knew and would just daydream. We were performing on a grassy knoll which had a drop that Eden, Kereen, and myself had to go down. I have learned that you have to be patient and have your mind open to new ideas, include everyone, and let them say their ideas. This was a really fun project and I will happily do it again 🙂
