This term, 2021 in science, we were put into a group to complete a challenge to try to build a 60cm tall and 30x30cm wide building made out of spaghetti and blue tack that had to withstand a simulated earthquake for as long as possible and not fall or break. The building had to be flexible but tall and be able to withstand shakes up and down and left and right.
We had a budget of $60 worth of fake money that had to afford the materials that we use with each gram of blue and every 10cm of spaghetti costing $1 each. The challenge for us was trying to build a sturdy and flexible building whilst still being able to fit within the budget and to try not to go over. We had made 2 models, our first one being unsuccessful, cost $60 but failed and our successful model costing $57 and was able to withstand the simulation very well.
As a team, we worked well and were able to incorporate all of our designs into the final model. We had 4 people in our group and 2 of us were working on building the model and the other 2 were working on researching the best ways we could possibly make the structure so that it would work as successfully as it could. We shared most of our ideas and constructive criticism over a Teams Chat and shared designs, videos and photos there as well. Our communication was overall quite good but something that we could’ve done differently is working out proper roles amongst the group before beginning as we didn’t communicate that as well as we could of.
The project was an overall success and I am proud of what my group and I were able to achieve together.
