Earthquakes have been a re-occurring natural disaster that can have extravagant impacts on peopleās lives. They are a substantial problem that occurs around many major countries and civilizations that are located on the Ring of Fire. We have been tasked with creating an earthquake-resistant building from spaghetti and blue tack which can survive an earthquake simulator and a weight test. Each group was given $60 to buy spaghetti and blue tack, as there was a limit to how much spaghetti and blue tack we could use. Our building was successful, surviving the 10-second earthquake simulator and 250 grams of weight placed on the top of the building.
Planning:
Original Design Improved Design
Overview Of Engineering Process:
In the engineering process, we had to first research design features that would help make a structure earthquake-resistant. After including these in our design we had to estimate the costs of our building. We spent exactly 60 dollars on the spaghetti and blue tack used to construct our tower. We made a 2D design for our structure on our computers. In this design, we included our earthquake-resistant features such as joints, stabilizers, and trusses. These design features made our structures more stable. Using these features shows that buildings become more earthquake-resistant from real-life examples. We made the design 2D because our tower’s sides are the same. After this, we started building our structure which took us a long time and a large amount of effort. During this challenge, we had to overcome and face a lot of challenges. One way to improve our structure was in the building process. We should have measured our spaghetti with a ruler before cutting it, so we didnāt waste as much and were able to use more of it in our structure. Another way of improving our structure was in the design process. We should have made our design 3D, this would have made it clearer when building our structure because it would have shown how the spaghetti was arranged on the inside.

Teamwork/Collaboration
‘ Our Structure ‘
Each member of our group had important roles which required everyone to have their special strengths. Saya was allocated as the project manager which required her to be responsible, help her team members understand the challenge and keep everyone on track. She used her strengths of leadership and responsibility to fulfil this role. Autumn was allocated as the equipment manager, which required her to be organized and help the group with the physical aspect of the project. Autumn completed this by using her communication skills and initiative. Tyler was allocated as a speaker and reporter which required him to be creative, confident and able to problem-solve to help find answers. This required Tyler to use his strengths of organization and integrity.

” When you have dream, you’ve got to grab it and never let go.” – Carol Burnett
In terms 3 & 4 our task for visual arts was to make a pinata in the form of a hybrid. Our influence was Roberto Benavidez who is a sculptor who specializes in pinatas. Robertoās influence for his passion comes from āThe Garden of Earthly delight by
“Robertos Influence”
Hieronymus boshā. This is an ancient oil painting that displays mythical creatures. Our first task was to search for mythical creatures and to sketch some ones we liked. I and Alison then combined the mythical creatures that we wanted to create our design. We decided to combine a bunny, deer and snake. We had to choose a colour palette. Alison and I decided on a cool colour palette. We wanted to choose pastel colours and it was themed blue. We wanted to make the snake tail on our mythical creature look unique so we made it go in a loop to make our creature look more interesting and stand out even though it caused us a lot more work and effort with completing the other stages of the pinata.
“Roberto Benavidez pinata”
For creating our mythical pinata we first had to get inspiration from images of mythical creatures. From there we combined the aspects of each image together to create our own unique creature. We had to decide on a colour scheme for our pinata. Alison and I decided on pastel colours with a cool theme. One of the hardest parts of the project was forming the cardboard into the shape of our mythical creature. From there we had to make it
“Part of our inspiration”
secure by tapping it and then layering it with gesso. After securing it we were able to start cutting and sticking paper onto it which was the most time-consuming part. Now we had to paint the sides we didnāt stick the paper to a colour that would make our theme (we decided on turquoise). Now we could decorate it with pompoms and fairy lights which made it look pretty and complete the pinata.
Throughout the project, I and Alison worked well and efficiently together to produce a creative/pretty pinata. We were both always ahead of the class and while having fun doing the project we worked efficiently at a high standard.
In the project, we experienced some minor problems along the way. One of the main issues we faced was that when we wanted to start sticker paper on the other side of the pinata, we were missing a few colours because they had run out. Because of this, we had to problem-solve together and we decided to come up with a new colour scheme for the other side, which still looked
” Our colour palette “
pretty. We also come into a few problems when painting the pinata. Since our shape was complicated, there were many small gaps and crevasses we had to paint into which was quite a struggle. But, after finding a small paintbrush we were able to complete painting the pinata.
Yes, we were always ahead and had completed what we needed to do. We had successfully created a mythical creature that turned into a pinata. In a lot of the lessons which we finished early, we were able to help other groups with their pinatas.
” Our finished pinata”
Our final pinata turned out to look very nice. With the fairy lights on them, it made them look very mythical and pretty. Our colour scheme seemed to work very well with our creature and the lights.
“part of the festival “
The pinatas we created were showcased at the illuminative festival. The pinatas we created in project X were an amazing contribution to the Illuminative festival. The pinatas looked amazing in pitch black with the fairy lights on. I felt happy to be showcasing the work that I and Alison had put a lot of effort and time into. The pinatas got a lot of good feedback and many parents said that it was one of the festival’s main highlights.
What collaboration means to me. Collaboration means positivity in interacting with others while building stronger connections with them and building teamwork. At the start of the year, our task was to form a group and produce a current affairs segment. With this task, we had to collaborate with others to complete the assessment at a high standard. It is important to collaborate with others because it improves your teamwork and to problem solve. Throughout the task, we had run into many small bumps along the way. For example, we couldn’t find the right outfit for the scene, but by being collaborative by messaging and organising we were able to work together and bring the clothes for each other. In this activity, I believe that I demonstrated good communication skills in the form of collaboration. Because of collaborating with each other, we were able to problem solve while working as a team.
What learner agency means to me. Learner agency means being more empowered with your learning and striving to improve by doing your best. In term 3 we had to write an essay about the Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. Building up to the assessment we had to practise our essay writing. In this process, we had peer marked each other essays to give feedback to each other in order to improve our work. This process has allowed me to improve my learner agency from the feedback I was given. I was able to relook over my essay and incorporate more keywords from the question to improve my work. This exercise has made me strive to improve my work, by improving my learner agency.
Our task was to make a presentation demonstrating our knowledge of alcohol-related issues affecting young people.
What was the biggest thing you learned while completing this task?
While completing this assessment I have learned a lot more about the government guidelines regarding alcohol. I have learnt how many standard drinks you should have in a day (4) and a week (10). I have learnt that many people binge drink, which can be due to peer pressure. There are many short-term/long-term effects this can have on you. Some short-term effects of binge drinking are nausea, vomiting, unconsciousness and violence. Long-term effects of binge drinking can include mental health conditions, seizures increased risk of various types of cancer and an increased chance of strokes. From this assessment, I have learnt that
different alcoholic beverages contain different amounts of alcohol in them. For example, a giant pint of beer can have the same percentage of alcohol in it compared to a small glass of wine. From this task, I have learned many risks can occur when consuming alcohol and that you should always have a responsible adult around and to have a responsible person around to keep track of how much you are drinking. I have learnt about many dangerous drinking games that people play that are very unhealthy for you and can even lead to death. For example one of the most hazardous drinking games is called power hour. In this game, you consume a shot of beer every minute and it is on for up to an hour. This game can make you very ill and can even lead to death. From this assessment, I have learnt a lot about alcohol, its effects of it, how to keep yourself safe/responsible when consuming alcohol and dangerous drinking games.
What one piece of advice would you pass on to young teenagers above all else? Why?
If I could pass on any advice to young teenagers it would be to try to hold back drinking and to start when you are legally allowed to and if you do underage drink make sure to be safe and follow the alcohol guidelines. If you do choose to consume alcohol, make sure someone responsible is sober and is able to limit your intake of alcohol. Only consume up to the standard drink of alcohol and ask a responsible adult first. I say this because once you start drinking it can become very addictive which is extremely dangerous for you. An excessive amount of alcohol can leave many short and long-term effects. It’s very important to have someone responsible and sober around when you drink and to drink in a safe location that you are familiar with.
” Our featured drinking game in our expo”
Write down a pledge that you will commit to if you start drinking alcohol (at the legal age of 18). Why did you pick these things to commit to? How will you stick to these commitments?
When I am at the legal age of 18 I pledge that I will never binge drink and always make sure that someone responsible is around when I consume alcohol. I say this because binge drinking has many extreme short and long-term effects on you that are very unhealthy. It’s very important to drink with someone responsible around you because they can limit your intake of alcohol and keep you safe. I will commit to this by telling the responsible sober person around me that I do not want to binge drink and that they can help prevent that by not giving me more than the standard drink.
For semester one for InnovatED I had chosen to do recycled jewellery and sculpting. Our task was to make recycled jewellery out of used jewellery from op shops and give them to children in need. We had brought two bags of jewellery of all different sorts and de-beaded them and first sorted them out into different shapes, size and colour. This process was very relaxing and fun. It was challenging because we didnāt have enough boxes to store the beads.
” Katherine and Me making bracelets’
The next process we had to go through was draw some designs of bracelets and design our logo. We has decided to call our business ‘Wish Makers’ because the bracelets were originally for children at the Perth’s Children’s Hospital. After we had drawn our designs we were able to start making them. This process was very fun but very fiddly. It was hard because the crimp that we had to use to secure the bracelets was extremely small and was very hard to fit the wire through it. We ran into a problem half way through the production stage because we had run out of clasps for the bracelets. We still had many beads left but we couldn’t make anymore because of the lack of clasps. But overall we had made enough but we could of made more.
After the production of the bracelets we had to decide on who to give our bracelets too. At first we had decided to donate them to the Perth’s Children’s Hospital. This had been our idea for majority of the project but after reading the Hospitals donation page terms and conditions we had realised we wouldn’t be able to donate them because they had to be completely sanitised. So we had to come up with a new idea. We had thought to give them to other people in need but decided this would be to hard to decide on the right place. So, we had ended up on selling the bracelets at the market and giving the funds to the Perth’s Children’s Hospital. We had made over 100 dollars to donate.
” Some of our boxes”
Since we had decided on where to donate our product we could start the packaging for our product. Me and Katherine had decided to try and make origami boxes. We had made four different types of boxes and found them extremely hard. We had taken lots of time on them but they hadn’t turned out very well. We had decided that none of the packaging worked because we had wanted to see the bracelets. We had ended up making holes in recycled card and threading the bracelets through it which ended up looking nice but because we didn’t know at this time that we couldn’t donate our bracelets we had made sweet messages on the card for the sick children in hospital.
” The four different types of boxes we went off”
We also had tried to make stickers with our logo on them to stick onto the back card but the stickers didn’t really work because they faded and we couldn’t find sticker paper so we ended up sticking them to our pin up boards to decorate them. We had made motivational messages for them in hope to cheer them up. But we couldn’t use the card because we couldn’t donate them. We had ended up arranging the bracelets colour coded on pin up to present them at the market.
On market day we had sold over half of our bracelets and if was really fun running the stall for some part of it. Overall this project has been really fun, relaxing and enjoyable. I have learnt many new skills such as making bracelets and made stronger connections with friends.
I am writing to ask you for your support/insight on the increasing coral bleaching in the great barrier reef and to improve this issue.
I am a resident of a Fremantle electorate; I care very passionately for the Great Barrier Reef, and I am extremely concerned for the health of our largest living ecosystem.
As you are aware over the past two decades the great barrier reef has experienced several mass bleaching events, including the one happening now, due to the warming planet. As you may know the coral reef is home to thousands of species of marine life, including marine life that are only found in this location and many of these species are on the road to extinction. In the great barrier reef there are 360 species of coral and 22 of them are predicted to become extinct. This is 16% of our coral that will be gone in the years to come as well as several diverse types of turtles, whales, crocodiles, fish and dugongs. Due to this coral bleaching 90% of the coral has lost its colour and been bleached and scientists predict that the coral may not be able to recover because of each passing day becoming hotter.
I understand that climate change is a huge problem, but we must learn to tackle the coral bleaching if we would like our Great Barrier Reef, a world heritage site, to remain alive and healthy. Fossil fuels are becoming a huge and upcoming problem that we would have to solve fast if we would like to see our reef in its bright beautiful colours. Because of the mining and burning of fossil fuels this contributes to our warming climate, trapping heat in our atmosphere and causing ocean temperatures to rise, leading to coral bleaching.
I understand this is a huge problem to solve all at once, but I am asking for Australia to start taking some more actions towards this issue. There are three easy precautions that Australia can make that will lead to a cleaner, healthier, and brighter future. One of these things is using more renewable energy. For example, you could invest in more solar and wind power. This could be providing Australians with solar panels, free of charge on their houses or building more windmills to help climate change.
Another solution to help this matter is to lower the prices of electric cars. Electric cars are extremely expensive around 10,000 dollars more expensive than a regular car. This makes majority of people not being able to afford an electric car. Only 23,000 Australians own electric cars. This an extremely small amount of people compared to our 25million population. All the other millions of cars are producing gasses that are horrible and are part of the cause that is leading to the extinction of our great barrier reef. By lowering the prices of electric cars, it will give more Australians an opportunity to be able to afford them, meaning there will be less pollution in our air. Leading to a brighter future with more colour in our coral.
To conclude, I ask you to take into consideration about the problems I have stated and how they are affecting our Great Barrier Reef greatly.
Our task was to make a science video that will be entered into a national science competition on the theme of change. We decided to make a video on the theme, of how your memory changes overtime as you get older. We decided to show case this by making an informative rap and editing it on Cap Cut. Our video will be assessed for how informative, relevant to the theme and how entertaining it is, which I think our video/rap fits the criteriaās.
” Us in our rapping clothes “
I think that our group was very organised, we had finished our video early meaning that we had a lot of extra time, and it wasnāt stressful. Everyone in the group had roles of being a rapper in the video and we all had fair shares of two scenes each. But only one person was able to do the editing for the video because we could only do it on one device. We all contributed evenly to our research, and we all helped with submitting the video to the competition. Everyone was able to contribute their ideas to the project and we all valued each otherās ideas and took them into consideration. For example, we had an idea that there would be a granny at the start but since no one wanted to act as the granny we scrapped that idea. If I had the opportunity to do this project again, we would of improved our video by putting music in the background and having a schedule of what we would be doing for each lesson so we would of been more organised.
” My drawing of a brain”
Our group was very kind and collaborative, but we did have one disagreement. None of us wanted to be the granny for the start of the video. Because of this it had caused some conflicts between us. So, we had cut the granny scene out and changed it to a drawing of something else. I would of improved this by having a video of us acting out the drawing that I drew to make the video slightly more entertaining.
” Us rapping “
Our group managed our time well. We had finished and uploaded our video on time. This was because we were very quick with our research and voice recordings. We worked very proactively for our filming and finished before the other groups. If I had to repeat the project again, we would be most likely of spend more time on filming for when we were rapping for the video because we couldnāt refilm it many times because it would of consumed to much of our time. We would also probably would try to use an editing app that we can all use and share, so we donāt put the load of editing all one person. Overall, this experience has been fun. I have learnt a lot more about memory and that itās fun to be a gangster/rapper.
I think that courage is really important to me because you have to be able to stand up for yourself and to be brave. You need to be able to stand up for your rights, passions and what you believe in. You need your opinion/voice to be heard. Courage gives you the power to be able to chase after what you love. If I didn’t have the courage to enter this art exhibition, I would of never found my passion and talent for painting. To me having courage is a very important value to have because you are not going to be able to go far in life without it.
Kindness
I think that kindness is a very important value to have. It is very important to me because it means being kind to others and also being kind to your self. Just showing a simple act of kindness can boost someone’s feelings confidence. This is very important to me I love to make people happy and smile. Its really important because being kind means caring about others and showing empathy towards them. Having kindness means that the world will be a happier place.
Friendship
Friendship is a really important value to me because you have someone to lean on and to trust. You can tell them things that you don’t tell anyone else, like your deep dark secrets and someone who will always support you. Having friendships will boost your happiness and give you a sense of belonging. This value impacts me and my life because having friends means having someone to talk to and not being lonely. For example when I am feeling sad sometimes I can call my friends and they never fail on putting a smile on my face.
Good Role Model
What behaviours does she demonstrate to show that she is healthy?
” An Example of her healthy breakfast”
Emma Watson is a very healthy and fit person. Some behaviours that she shows is that she goes on a healthy diet. She doesn’t starve her self or only eats one meal a day. Her way of going on a diet is eating what her idea of real food is. This is food that isn’t processed and doesn’t have chemicals but food that is healthy and fresh. Emma is committed to her work out routines. Everyday she will work out and is committed to take care of her body. She always wants to move and keep fit. Emma Watson is a strong, young independent woman who is determined to take care of herself.
Emma Watson
What does she look like? Is she healthy? How do you know?
She is a very pretty young woman. She takes care of her self because she looks fit and talks care of her body. You know this because she is very cautious on what she eats and does a lot of exercise/work out routines.
What message does she promote? Why is it inspiring and healthy?
Emma Watson promotes many messages. Such as healthy eating, working out regularly, feminism and wearing sustainable clothes. These are all very inspiring and healthy messages because they promote people to take care of them selves, stand up for equality and to take care of the environment. She promotes people to eat healthy foods that are fresh and not processed. She promotes people to exercise regularly. Wearing sustainable clothes means clothes from op-shops or ones that are made out of sustainable materials. All of these messages that she promotes are very inspiring but I think that feminism is particularly inspiring because not many young woman promote it as strong as Emma Watson. She is a very inspiring woman who inspires many young woman and teenagers to do the same, to try to incorporate more equality into our world, to take care of your bodies and to take care of the environment.
Why should young people look up to this person as a role model?
” Emma Watson as Hermione “
Because Emma Watson is a very inspiring person who wants to change the world to a better place. When she was younger she acted as Hermione in the world wide famous series, Harry Potter. Who influenced many young generations to admire intelligence. She inspires people because she believes that anyone can achieve their dreams no matter how far away they are or hard. She believes that being smart is never a bad thing. Emma Watson will always fight for equality and for a better world. She is a very good role model because she always is determined to take care of herself and the others around her. She has so many good morals and is a an amazing role model that many people inspire to be.
Thinking back to your House of Values activity, what values does she demonstrate?
Emma Watson demonstrates multiple values that make our world a happier place. One of her main values is Love. She finds it very important that you should take care of yourself and love yourself, not self hate. She believes your should value yourself and not starve yourself so you look skinny.
āI donāt have perfect teeth, Iām not stick thin. I want to be the person who feels great in her body and can say that she loves it and doesnāt want to change anything.ā ~Emma Watson
Another value that Emma Watson demonstrates is to be humble. When she achieved her success and fame of acting as Hermione, she never let it go to head. She believes that in any circumstance staying humble will get you far in life because it will make you appreciate that what comes to you is through hard work and having a lot of dedication. One last Value that she demonstrates is humour. Emma Watson thinks that it is very important to have a sense of humour, because being able to make light of a situation will help you move forward towards your goal though the bumps and set backs. Emma Watson demonstrates many values that are important and makes the world a better brighter place.
Bad Role Model
What behaviours does she demonstrate to show that she is unhealthy?
Some behaviours that Kim Kardashian demonstrates that are unhealthy is that she is obsessed with perfecting her body. She is obsessed on looking perfect all the time, which is an unachievable thing because no one can look perfect. Being over obsessed with your body is very unhealthy for you as it can lead to a dieses called Body dysmorphic disorder. Another behaviour that shows she is unhealthy is that Kim Kardashian will take photos of herself anywhere. Even in pubic bathrooms she will take pictures of herself and post them on social media. Their are many behaviours that she demonstrates that are unhealthy.
Kim Kardashian
What does she look like? Does she look unhealthy? How do you know?
No, Kim Kardashian does not look unhealthy on the outside. She looks like a very fit skinny woman. This is because she goes on a plant based diet and works out. But her body shape is not regular for many people to have as she is very skinny.
What message does she promote? Why is it unhealthy?
This celebrity promotes on having a skinny, curvy body and being pretty. Because she is a famous influencer, many people see her photos. This is a very unhealthy message to promote because this means many people that look at her photos will feel ashamed of there body and feel body shamed. This is very bad because it can lead to people feeling insecure, not valuing them selves and start to not eat just because of a photo that Kim Kardashian posted.
Do you think young people should look up to her as a role model? Why or why not?
No. I do not think that young people should look up to her as a role model. This is because she is obsessed with her body but not in a healthy way. She always wears an excessive amount of makeup wherever she goes which encourages people to do the same and not show their true selves. She is not a good role model because she encourages people to post on social media and show their bodies. A study in the UK shows that 8 in 10 young teenage girls say that pressure from social media is extremely overwhelming and leads to mental illness for their age group. I strongly agree that Kim Kardashian is not a good role model for you people because she causes people to not value them selves and to live a fake life.
Is everything you hear, read or see in the media true?
No, not everything in the media is true. The media doesn’t always say the truth or say the whole story. For example the media only shows Kim Kardashian photos of her smiling or having fun. Not photos of her crying or being depressed. They can say white lies or lies that change your whole perspective on something. Sometimes they only say the good things that are happening but they don’t explain the things that go on behind the scenes.

Making our ad was an amazing and enjoyable experience. Our task was to make an advertisement of our own product that we came up with. My group decided to base our ad on an made up energy drink called energo.
THE PLANNING PROCESS:
First, we had to get our idea approved to start making our ad. When we first came up with our idea, we had to find a way to make this product stand out and showcase it so that it was interesting. We had to make a product that would include a Want, Desire and Need. At first, we werenāt too sure on what our product would be. We had a range of different ideas, and then we got to the thought of an energy drink. We thought Powerade. We got the idea of Powerade, so then we thought that Powerade gives you energy. Thatās why we called our product Energo. āIt makes you faster and it makes you goā. That’s our slogan. So, we decided our website to be www.enrgo.notpowerade.com because we got out inspiration from it.
” Our story Board”
For the ad we had to make many panning documents to make this ad successful. First, we made a script and came up with characters. We also made a story board, so we will know where to film each scene and what will happen in it. I think that me and my group should have taken more consideration into what we would wear in each scene. This is because in the race scene we are wearing formal uniform when with the lunch scene we were wearing house uniform, so it didn’t make much sense. So, we would have had to plan it better.
THE PRODUCTION PROCESS:
” Our Script for the ad“
Filming: : During the filming process we ran into a few problems. One was that when we were filming each scene there where crows in the background, so it wasn’t clear what we were saying because of the crows. One other problem is that when we were needing to film, one of the main characters in our ad where away, meaning we couldn’t film. This made us fall behind as we didn’t have much time to film the other scenes. When we did film them, we were rushed so we weren’t able to get the perfect video. For filming next time, we need to spend an equal amount on each scene, so we don’t just focus on one scene for a large amount of time. Even though when we were filming we ran into problems, but we still were able to produce a great ad.
” A snip from our ad in Premier Pro”
THE POST PRODUCTION PROCESS:
For the postproduction process we started to put our ad together. We did this by using premier pro. To make our ad look good we had to use effects such as sounds, music and transitions. Putting these effects was a bit of a process because the app kept on crashing regularly, meaning that we found it difficult to edit our ad and because it was also glitchy. Next time I would try to learn how to use premier pro before we started to film. This is because I found the app very confusing and hard to use. If I learnt how to use the app before then I would have been able to help more and do some at home.
“One of the scenes in our ad”
In the postproduction process we had problems we had to come over, but their where many other things that went well. After some time, we were able to add all the music and the different effects we wanted. Overall, I think me and me group made a great effective ad.
FINAL OVERVIEW:
Making our ad has been a long journey with many obstacles on the way. But, on this path we overcame many challenges and was able to achieve many things. I think some of the best aspects of our ad is that itās funny, it captures our product well and our ad is easy to follow and to understand. For our ad I think it would have been better if we improved on our editing skills. Because if we were better at it, we could have added more effects, such as cool transitions or more sound effects.
While making the ad I learnt how to use a tripod and use the cameras that attach to it. I also learnt that Flick, Katherine, Ella, and I make a great team. If I had to make this ad again and do something differently, I would of spend equal time filming each scene and not rushing them. Overall, I have really enjoyed this process of making our ad and it has been an amazing learning experience.
