My Learning

Some people might consider school a waste of time. Others will find it fun and exciting. Well I consider it a mix of both. While I see some activities as pointless, others are a fun activity to participate in. And I also keep in mind that the whole point of school is to educate us to help grow our understanding of certain things. I love the subjects that allow me to be creative like Science, Math, Religion & Philosophy, and Design Technologies. I don’t especially dislike certain subjects, it’s just I prefer different learning areas over others.

Because, at the time of writing this, I am in Year 10, I have been thinking recently about what ATAR courses to take in Year 11 and 12. I decided that I want to pick classes that I will find fun. The classes I have been thinking about choosing are:
1. Math Methods
2. Math Specialist
3. Physics
4. English Lit
5. Digital Media Production
6. Philosophy
While the first 5 are all O.K. to go, Philosophy ATAR has been difficult to sort out. I think it would be fun to take part in, but the school I go to doesn’t offer it as a course. We have been trying to figure out how to be able to take a philosophy course recently, though.

Quickly Fast-forward 3 weeks:
Future me here*…
I had recently completed my course counselling and out of the 6 I stated I wanted to do last paragraph, I managed to get 5 of them (kind of):
1. Math Methods
2. Math Specialist
3. Physics
4. Literature
5. Phycology
6. A certificate in creative industry’s
All of these were ones that had interested me before, and now I am going to be doing these. Infact I was recommended for all of them but Specialist Maths. This means that I have to try extra hard to prove that I can get a good grade in mathematics.

*Technically, the future me is only the future of the past me who wrote this. So actually, this is past me writing this

Recently, I have been learning the biggest lesson of my life so far: You have to put in effort, to get out what you want. Debatably, I have a high intellect and so never had to try during Jr School. This means that I didn’t learn how to do simple things like pay attention, take a test, or face failure. This has lead to me having to learn these things in less then a year. While this has been difficult for me, I pushed through, managing to get half way up the (metaphorical) hill.

Over the years, I have come to learn about the way that I learn best. Some people are visual, others are literal, and others are the kind that like to learn by them self’s. I am much better at learning when the teacher is direct and straight forward. This means I know what to learn, but I get to pick how to learn it. Giving me flexibility within confines (which is my favourite type of freedom). I know where I need to get, but I can get there however I like. The reason this style of teaching works is because I can do what I want (within reason) without getting side-tracked or distracted.

As well as the learning inside of school, I take part in a couple of classes outside of school. These include Viola and that’s about it, actually. I don’t just learn about music in my viola classes, I also learn some key lessons in life. My viola teacher helps me through difficult parts of a song and even gives me advice for school and home. The main reason I do viola classes, though, is to learn a knew instrument.

The simple act of learning a new instrument opens up many new opportunities and possibilities of what and how I can learn both in and outside of school.

To learn an instrument is to learn 2 new languages: Music and Italian
