Grey Water Recycling – Science – Project Utopia

What is it?

Greywater is the relatively clean waste water from baths, sinks, washing machines, and other kitchen appliances. It can be re used for things like watering your plants and lawn or agriculture – You can use grey water for the more efficient types of watering unlike flood irrigation. However, it can not be used for drinking because it has been slightly contaminated and could make you very sick. Grey water can be very useful for saving water. Instead of wasting you r water from your baths and laundry you could use it as water to flush the toilet. Instead if wasting the water from your dishwashers, sinks and other kitchen appliances you could use it to water your plants and gardens. This is why greywater recycling is a very good idea but only a limited amount of people actually know about it.

How does it work

See the source image
Grey water can come from many appliances including sinks

First all the left over water (greywater) is collected from all you appliances such as your washing machine, kettle, dishwashers, sinks, showers and baths. Next you can use the water from these appliances and use for things like you garden, water fruit trees, ornamental plants and the edible plant’s roots. The treated greywater can also be re used to do your laundry again or it can be water used to flush toilets. – You can install greywater recycling systems from the start (when you build your home) although it can usually be very expensive and time consuming. However, if you live in a drought-affected part of the country and have to rely on rainwater for your household water supply, a greywater treatment system could help a lot with saving water. If plumbed into your toilet and washing machine, you can save so much precious drinking water that we need to survive.

How can it be incorporated into Project Utopia?

It can be incorporated into Project Utopia because my global goal is having more sustainable communities therefor, recycling water means that we wont run out of water for a very long time because we use water our efficiently and cleaner water helps for better communities. It also helps for life under the sea and on land. Sustainability is very important to my global goal. Having a sustainable and reliable amount of water for the future generations to come is very important to having better communities and society’s. Factoring in grey water recycling into the area of Fremantle that we are designing could be very useful. If we decided to place in restaurants and cafe’s, they would have to use a reasonable amount of water because they use water to cook, they serve water at every table and they need bathrooms. Because it is a restaurant of a café they would need to wash a lot of dishes therefor they would be wasting a fairly large amount of water but if they had grey water recycling they could use that water for the bathroom and any greenery they have nearby or into the building.
