ePortfolio drama set design reflection

1) What musical have you chosen? Short synopsis. Highlight main themes/ideas/ Elements of Drama

I have chosen the classic Musical drama “High School Musical!”

The movie follows after the protagonist Troy Bolton, the star athlete at a small-town high school, who falls for nerdy beauty Gabriella Montez at a holiday karaoke party. When they return to campus, Troy and Gabriella audition for the upcoming school musical. Meanwhile, the jealous Sharpay Evans conspires to squelch their chances. The two must struggle to make it to auditions while also meeting their existing obligations to the basketball team and the academic decathlon. The musical then proceeds to give Troy the choice of music or basketball, while some tear-jerking songs in between.

2) What is the staging form? Why does the staging form suit this musical?

The staging form for HSM proscenium Arch. It suits this musical because this is more of an upfront broad-way type of musical which proscenium Arch staging really excels in.

3) What are the setting/locations. How do you change time and space?

The locations of the musical include the basketball court, the food court, the house party, And the audition room. I plan on showing change between each setting by bringing on props and furniture to help make the scenery more realistic, for example (lunch-time benches for the food court) or (moving the basketball ring for the basketball scene. I can also change the time and space by changing the lighting of the scene. For the intense and exciting scenes, the lighting will be mostly yellow and bright, for romantic scenes between Troy and Gabriella, more red-ish pink lighting to demonstrate love and affection, and for intense scenes that cause anger or frustration, I would use more maroon and dark red colours.

4) Does it have any moveable pieces? (revolve stage/fly tower/hydraulic)

Yes, As you can see from the sketches (if you have them on you) Most of the chairs and tables are brought on Props, and basketballs when doing basketball set choreography will be important.

6) What is the principle of design?

Movement.

  • With the two levels of the set, you can see the two worlds of High school musical, We use movement of props and people to effect how the eye naturally moves throughout the design. The top level will represent the singing sections for the play and the bottom will represent the basketball scene and the math scenes
