EGG TEMPERA AND STILL LIFE
For this semester, our class was focusing on the renaissance and the famous masterpieces and artists that were created during that period, so, our project we were assigned was, a still life drawing and painting.
Instead of using normal acrylic paints, we had to create paint using egg yolks, water, and pigment, this is called egg tempera. Egg tempera was the type of paint the renaissance artists used to create their artworks, such as the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo and the Manchester Madonna also by Michelangelo.
For the duration of this project, we have had to display a lot of the skills and capabilities we haven’t had the chance to develop to this extent before. One of the main ones was organised. Although I do have to show this in my daily life, I had to make sure I had finished every tiny part of the project and completed every step. It was also very easy to fall behind the rest of the class and have to do extra work at home to catch up. I believe I have met all of the requirements so far and I think I can finish.
Another skill we practiced this semester was, creativity. I don’t think we get enough time to demonstrate from day to day and I think that this was a great opportunity to mature this ability. Since it is Visual Arts it’s pretty obvious that this project was designed to test our creativity, but I still think that it deserves recognition. Creating our own paint was a great experience and it opened up a lot of opportunities with colours and shades. The still life itself gave you a lot to work with due to the shapes and placement. I have really enjoyed this project so far and I’m so excited to see what it will look like in the end.
I really enjoyed completing this project, it was amazing to learn how to make our own paint and use it on a still life drawing. Throughout this time we have learnt how to draw with the right side of our brain and how to use negative and positive space, practiced symmetrical and contour drawing and painting with Egg Tempera. I am really glad to have this experience going forward and I’m excited to learn more.
