Project Utopia reflection
In Project Utopia, I worked in a group with Charlotte, Marcus, and Poppy. In this project, we were focusing on the Fremantle Port Authority and its possible relocation. We were asked to think of sustainable ways to use the location and its materials and turn it into something else that included features of a livable place. We were to use the UN Global Goals to guide us to plan the project. At the start, we discussed different options such as restaurants, cafes, and parks but finally, we agreed to plan a hotel using shipping containers to build multiple two-story apartments to make an all-ages resort. We decided this was the best option because it would be a good use of materials that could be reused without impacting the environment, we could include some of the UN Global Goals, and by reusing the containers this way they would not go to landfills, and new materials would not have to be produced which would cause pollution. This was a good example of sustainability. The ASC capabilities chart (shown in the picture bellow) shows us what capabilities we need for good collaboration like teamwork. At the start my team did not have good teamwork. We argued about what our idea should be but then a teacher came along and gave us feedback which helped us to make a decision because we were getting behind schedule. This taught our group that it is important to get feedback to help make decisions and get on with the work.

Livability
Some features that make a place livable are a good climate, jobs, affordability and recreation activities, and open spaces. Our project would improve the livability of Fremantle by creating jobs to build the resort and work at the resort. The hotel will be affordable and there will be many activities for the hotel guests. The jobs include cleaners, receptionists, chefs, waiters, and gardeners. Some of the activities may include concerts and parties but most of the activities will be from the natural location of the place is in a good climate and next to the coast and near Fremantle. So, visitors can swim in the pool, go to the beach, ride bikes, and go for walks along the coast or to Fremantle. We think that this improves livability because we have great activities for people to do because of the climate and location, plenty of jobs for people, and affordable prices for the people who are staying at the hotel.

Vision board
The vision board is a board that shows pictures and words for what your goal is going to look like. Our vision boards show our ideas about sustainability, livability the global goals, and how we are going to make them happen. The vision boards were an important part of our presentation because our presentation was going to revolve around the board and help our audience understand what we were planning to do. On my groups’ vision board, we had a picture of container hotels, hydro pumps, green roofs, concerts, open spaces. We also had the words sustainability, liveability, and the global goals icons on our vision board. Everyone in the group chose a part of the vision board to work on. I chose container hotels and green roofs for sustainability. Our vision board was a clear image of our ideas, and we would plan to complete our goal for Project Utopia to create a sustainable and livable place using the UN Global Goals to guide us.

UN Global goals
The UN Global Goal is a set of 17 goals made by world leaders to create a better world by 2030 with sustainability. The global goals included in our project were 6, 7, and 11, these goals were, number 7 renewable energy, number 6 clean water and sanitation, and number 11 sustainable cities and communities. We used these global goals to make our hotel more livable and sustainable for people of all ages. We did this by including renewable energy sources such as solar panels to create energy from the sun and hydro pumps to create energy from the water in the nearby ocean. We used clean water and sanitation because we were surrounded by water that was salty and we were using it for taps, showers, washing, and the pool so it needed to be cleaned. We used the containers in a sustainable way by reusing them and by reusing the containers we are keeping some of the Freemantle port histories. The green roofs we planned for the hotel were an innovative (goal 9) way to reduce the energy requirements of the hotel and also helped the environment by providing plants to clean the air and create a sustainable community.

These are the global goals that we needed to use to
Create our plan.
Sustainability
Sustainability means using the earth’s resources in a way that they are there for future generations. Our project was based on the idea of reusing shipping containers from the Fremantle Port to create a shipping container hotel. The containers are made out of steel which is made out of iron ore is a non-renewable resource, so we thought it was important to reuse this material rather than produce more building materials.
