Fremantle Redesign
introduction
Fremantle Port is being relocated. Our assignment was to Reimagine Fremantle Port and make it into a community where all people thrive. The year seven cohort had a once in a lifetime opportunity to help influence what Fremantle port was going to become. The chance to do this project came as a surprise to both the students and the teachers. Because the opportunity to do this project only came up weeks before the term started. We were all super excited to start designing and making a difference in the future of Fremantle. There are many ways to make a community thrive and even more ways to redevelop one, but when I heard that, I thought about how we could make Fremantle port into an area that can help all people thrive. I thought about ways it could help Perth, Western Australia, Australia, and even other countries to succeed.

Liveability
Livability measures how the quality of living in a city, country or area depends on certain factors. These factors fall into two groups objective and subjective factors. Objective factors are measurable factors. An example of these is infrastructure, healthcare and climate. An emotional factor can be influenced by personal opinion or emotions such as spiritual connections, personal likes and dislikes or traditions. Our group didn’t focus as much on subjective factors. One of our focuses for this project was traditions and spiritual connections. We did this through the many links to aboriginal culture and traditions. These links included a memorial trail showcasing the members of the aboriginal community that have contributed to the prosperity of Fremantle and Perth. Another one of our main focuses was infrastructure. This links to our energy and water handling and all building and services available in our port redesign. We did this through recycling greywater, renewable energy sources such as solar panels and easy access to healthcare through large open spaces that emergency services can easily use to help anyone who needs it. Even though every goal was not achieved, the understanding and effective use of these factors would have made any design a more livable city.
Sustainable Development Goals
The sustainable development goals are 17 goals created by the United Nations to be completed by 2030. the purpose of the goals is to make a more sustainable planet and a better place to live. The sustainable development was a concept taught to us at the beginning of this project and quickly became one of the most prominent points of focus to help us create a Fremantle redesign that is both sustainable and a community that can thrive. There are many goals, but my group decided to focus on a few of them heavily. Even though we didn’t focus on some plans, all of them still impacted our decisions. One of these goals is clean water and sanitation: we achieved this goal by recycling greywater (greywater is water that has been used to wash) from taps, showers and other producers of greywater to grow plants and even food. The plants that we used were plants that required little water. Another one of our main focuses was affordable and clean energy: the primary way of achieving this goal was through renewable energy such as solar and wind energy. We would do this by positioning solar panels on the tall buildings and large shaded areas. These specific goals that I have explained in this text are mostly to do with sustainability, but that is not the only focus of the goals. If you want to learn more about the UN sustainable development goals, go to https://sdgs.un.org/goals.

ASC capabilities
The ASC capabilities are a group of skills or capabilities essential to being an effective student, employee, or influential team member. The ASC capabilities are significant to innovate ed and, as a result, they were meaningful to the learning involved in this project. The capabilities I believe I did well in during this project were: leadership: I think I often held my group together and helped steer our ideas in a unified direction. Creative: our whole group excelled in this area. We came up with original and innovative ideas for everything in our project while also taking inspiration from other cities worldwide. The final capability I believe I did well in is organisation: my group and I were always on time for all deadlines and due dates throughout this project. We kept notes and ideas contained in a OneNote. In addition, we had jobs allocated to particular group members. My group and I succeeded in these capabilities, which made a very positive difference in the final product of this project.

Public speaking skills/showcase
The showcase was the finale of the whole project. We used our vision boards, ideas, and knowledge to present to special guests, parents, and teachers. Also, the people making the actual decisions about what was happening to the Fremantle port area were at the showcase. Sadly one of our group members, Ruby Adams, was away on the day. We didn’t let this factor hold us back, even though Ruby held some valuable information. Most guests were intrigued by our ideas and wanted to know more about them. At the presentation, all of our group members spoke and contributed. We mostly said the same or similar thing to most guests and mostly stayed to our areas of knowledge. However, each group member did not speak for the same amount of time as some of our ideas were more prominent than others. All of our group members were very comfortable talking to all of the guests, and all spoke in a very professional yet still informative and conversational way.

Vision Boards
The final product of this project was our vision board. A vision board is “A collage of images and words representing a person’s wishes or goals”. We made the vision board to express our ideas in an exciting and easily understandable way. Our vision boards contained all our focuses and decisions for the port, liveability, and UN global goal focuses. However, the vision board also had another purpose; to aid the showcase. It helped us explain and communicate our ideas to the visitors who wanted to know about our beliefs.
Ties into other subjects
This project spanned many other parts of the curriculum. They included.
HASS
In HASS, we learned about the livability factors and other knowledge areas to make a city or place more desirable/ sustainable.
English
In English, we read the Giver, a book about a perfect society. we also learnt some skills to do with public speaking
Science
In Science, we learnt about the water cycle and ways to make better use of water.

our focus and final design
Our focus for this project was tourism. We wanted to turn the port into an area that would be very popular for tourism. We decided on this approach because of the many tourism opportunities in the area. The main ones were: Rottnest ferries, cruise ships, the ocean view and the other entertainment opportunities around Fremantle. Our design was to incorporate open space for the entertainment of families and younger visitors, A large central building with options for apartments, hotels, office space and entertainment venues. These features would be for the enjoyment of adults and teenagers. Another focus of our design is a memorial trail for aboriginal leaders in the Fremantle and Perth communities. All these design features have been chosen to fit our objectives for this redesign. We hope that our ideas may help the redesigners develop a port redesign that will be a place where all people can thrive.

conclusion
This project has taught and improved my skills in many ways. First, it has furthered my college capabilities and taught me much about sustainability and innovation. Second, this project has also enhanced my ability to work in groups by a substantial amount. Finally, this project has taught me many things in HASS and English that are typically taught in a regular classroom setting. This project has been a great alternative to traditional projects while still being heavily educational.
