Introduction:
With the Fremantle Port relocating to Kwinana, a large landmass of what was the port will now be vacant. So, it is our job to find a replacement that is not only suitable, but also feasible for the land. To do this, there are many issues we need to account for. Things like erosion and the location of the port will all play a major role into making it a better place.
Our specific focus:
During the project, we all had many focuses. My group(s) and I had mainly focused on transport, sustainability and efficiency of the things in the port.
The Global Goals:
The Global Goals are 17 goals agreed by world leaders, in an attempt to make the world a better place. These goals are planned to be achieved by 2030. So we found a few global goals to focus on throughout the entire project, to see if we can achieve them at the end.
Livability Factors:
Before we begun the project, we were required to look at the livability factors of the port. This meant we had to create a table, stating all the factors that could influence the liveability of the Fremantle Port. Things like the sustainability and the housing all played a key role into making sure the Fremantle Port was as liveable as possible.
The Excursion:
The next stage of the project was going on an excursion around the Fremantle Port, to outline the size, shape and overall feel of the Fremantle Port. While we were there, we had a notepad which we used to note down things like where heritage sites are, what can be improved, what is there already and what is not there already, needs the place may have and general observations of the Port. After the short excursion to the Fremantle Port, we returned to school with an open mind of what this was about.
Vision Boards:
The next stage of the process was to get into groups, and create vision boards. These vision boards would be our first design/idea for what to do with the Fremantle Port. My group consisted of Riley, Oliver B, Ethan K and I. Together, we created a great vision board about our design for the Fremantle Port.
Going into detail, our main idea regarded creating a society where cars were not used, and instead, were substituted by public forms of transport such as buses, trains and trams. This would make the place more sustainable (we had more ways that will be explained in the next few sentences). Also, we wanted to have a strong economy to increase the living standard of the port. So, we added markets and other businesses such as apartments and hotels to do this. Next, we look at housing. We planned to have compact and container ship housing to help factor sustainability and affordability to the project. We also had apartments to help satisfy the needs for a more broader range of people. Finally, we looked at the fun and recreation of the people living in the port. Here, we decided on a “Youth Hub” where children and teens could go to entertain themselves with various sports and games. As well as this, we implemented many fields, ovals, playgrounds and relaxation areas to help suit more ages. In a conclusion, we had many ways of making sure the Fremantle Port was the best place for all.
Something extra…
For this project, we made a vision board and infographic to go with it. While I could not find the vision board, I did find the infographic. This is the link to it: HASS Infographic .docx
CoSpaces:
Next, we changed groups, and started working on a CoSpace. Now, for people who don’t know, CoSpaces is a website where you can create 3D models online, to presentate, or view. We did this for only one section of the entire Fremantle Port (I will tell you what section it was in the next paragraph), adding lots of detail into all models. Now, because we were advised to avoid using words (although we used a few), and instead show, don’t tell, we decided to make the CoSpace as understandable as possible. To do this, we made sure that all concepts we wanted to communicate to the audience were easy to follow and understand for everyone. At the end, this was our final product (the large dome building on the top right corner will be explained later) :
The final Presentation:
After completing the vision boards and CoSpaces, we begun a new presentation. This time, we chose 1 out of 8 sections of the Fremantle port to do for our presentation. The section we chose, was section 6, which looked like this:
The beginning:
For this project, we will be creating a speech that lasts around 8 minutes, explaining all the ideas and plans for the section of the Fremantle Port. Because we had 3 people in the group, we did 3 topics to talk about: Sustainability (I did this), What’s special about Fremantle and Transport. First though, we must talk about the location in itself. Because there is a large amount of water separating the two sides of the section, we decided on making a tram bridge crossing over the water. On the other side, we decided to make a history walk to reflect on the past of Australia and a large amphitheater called Mandjar that can showcase performances about Aboriginal dreamtime stories. So, now that you know the layout, we will look at the sustainability part of our design. We settled on Solar car parks and Biopak (a type of packaging for food which can be thrown in the organic bin) as some ways of sustainability. These solar car parks are designed to power most of our section including the tram line and Mandjar. For what’s special about Fremantle, the history walk and Mandjar are our ideas. For transport, we are heavily focusing on the tram line.
Here is the link to our script, which outlines everything in a lot more detail: English Speech Utopia.docx
Multimodal language:
For the people who don’t know, multimodal language are things like props and images, that convey information in different ways other than speaking. Though now that we have our script done, we needed to focus on these. While we already had our CoSpaces, we needed to now use other ways. We focused on making a real life model with everything on it. Luckily we had a great arts and crafts person (Lua) who made all our models.
Another group member (Sean) also created a minecraft video to model how the tram line would work, and all the components to it:
Finally, We also had my CoSpace of the entire design
Here is our sway we used for the speech: https://sway.office.com/kViKzdSdiVSgKwGw?ref=Link
The speech:
Now that our script and multimodal was done, it was speech time. The entire thing went well without a hiccup, and overall, I am very happy with how it turned out. But now that we had finished presenting to our class, we had to present to our parents! Again, it went very well, and overall, we were all satisfied with the results.
Conclusion:
Finally, project utopia was over. Overall, it was a great learning experience, and it let me learn problem solving skills, leadership skills and many other things!
