Teamwork is a capability, essential for school, and after school life. During my Year 9 Camp in Kalbarri, I was able to work on and practice this skill, as teamwork is a capability, I am not the strongest at.
Camp Kalbarri had its ups and down. The gorgeous scenery and my friends made the experience unreal, although the poor weather made simple tasks like cooking dinner and putting up/taking down the tents hard. Cooking in the rain was probably the biggest challenge, as the tarp we sat under wasn’t big enough for everyone, and the sand was a big issue too, as it got everywhere. To overcome these challenged I had to use teamwork to ensure that we got these tasks done effectively and efficiently, while having a lot of fun on the way.
First one person from our smaller group would gather the ingredients which were already split up into proportions for the entire group of 20. This way we were organised and didn’t have to worry about having missing vegetables later on. Once we had gathered all of our ingredients, two people would start to chop the vegetables. We needed to start this task as it was the most difficult during the cooking process. It was my job to set up the Trangia. The Trangia has many different components and it simple to set up but can take some time to heat up the wok. To make sure we would be as efficient as possible, I made sure to set up whilst the ingredients were getting prepped. This allowed for great organisation and efficiency.
Although, a lot of different capabilities and lots of long term skills were developed on this camp, such as leadership, organisation, and effective communication. I believe that teamwork was the one capability which Year 9 Camp allowed me to develop and practice the most.
