Re-imagining Fremantle Port

Introduction

The Year 7’s were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, this opportunity was to brainstorm and create ideas for the re-design of the Fremantle port. This opportunity was only discovered weeks before the start of term 3, so there was a huge rush to make sure we were able to do this. We were split into groups, and we began to work on what ways we could make the area of the port a good place for the citizens of Perth. My group wanted to create an eco-friendly living area for families and young adults which consisted of eco-friendly apartments which ran on renewable energies.

The UN Global Goals

What are the global goals?

The Global Goals are goals created by the United Nations in January 2016. These goals were created in hope of a better future that is more sustainable, equal, and easier to live in.

The global goals we chose to focus on were Climate action (13), Clean water and sanitation (6), and Renewable energy (7). We thought that these global goals suited what we were building the best and that they were the best global goals to use to make sure we had a safe and sustainable living area for families and young adults. https://www.globalgoals.org/

Livability

What are the livability factors?

Well, these factors can either be objective (like climate and infrastructure) and/or subjective factors (Like personal likes and dislikes) We use these to help us with what we need to add, and what people would like us to put in.

The livability factors we choose are the objective factors. They are Infrastructure, and Safety, and stability. We Chose these because we felt these would fit best for what we thought people needed.  The infrastructure factor for the apartments we want to add, to make sure they are the right height and size to fit a small family or a couple of people. We also chose the safety and stability factor for of    course the safety of the citizens who would be living there. We wanted our apartments to be safe and sustainable, at the same time.

Sustainablilty

We wanted to make this project as sustainable as possible, so we needed to find the best ways to make this sustainable. As I said above, we wanted our area to have eco-friendly apartments. The apartment area we are wanting to put it will be run on most or all renewable energy. To do this we want to add to the apartments things like solar panels, solar hot water system, greywater recycling system, small wind turbines on the coast, so that when the Fremantle doctor comes past and that will allow the wind turbines to collect the wind energy. We are also adding green rooves on top of some apartments so that we could maybe add a community veggie garden which will be watered by the grey water we recycle.

Vision Board

To show our thinking, we had to create a vision board that showed people what we came up with for our vision of the Fremantle Port re-design. These vision boards had to show what our ideas were with pictures and no small descriptions or anything like that. It needed to be pictures that helped us with our presentation. As a group, we had to decide on what pictures we were going to add, and how it was laid out. This was a bit of a process but in the end, we finished right on time.

Capabilities wheel

The ASC Capability wheel for making a positive difference was used a lot with all the group work we did. If I had to choose some of the capabilities for the way my group acted with each other, they would be collaboration, creativity, problem-solving and effective communication. I chose these things because I think my group collaborated well and we came up with some amazing ideas. The ideas we came up with were very creative and out of the box. During the whole process, we had to change some parts of our ideas, so we had to problem-solve and adjust our idea. And even though we had some arguments here and there, we got through them and continued to work well together.

Conclusion

This whole experience was very fun and exciting. We got to try out so many different things that I never would have thought I would have gotten to do. I feel like I got to know the people in my group a bit better and I felt that we all worked well together.
